Really interested to talk about this fight with the community because I'm not sure if this is a controversial take or not, but I think right now, Charles is an awful matchup for Max. We've seen Max lose his chin just a little bit in his last three fights, and he's essentially traded some chin points for power points, because he's hitting a LOT harder at Lightweight now. But, Charles Oliveira is a HARD puncher, definitely has more natural power than Poirier and Gaethje who were both able to drop Max with shots around the back of the ear. I think Oliveira would be extremely pressure heavy, look to clinch max and land those kinds of shots. The way Gaethje got the collar tie on Max and dropped him in the fourth is a very similar sequence Oliveira could use. And that's only the striking, we really haven't seen ANYONE try a jiu-jitsu heavy attack on Max Holloway in, maybe a decade? Volkanovski was able to get a few takedowns in their second fight, and Ilia took Max down twice but couldn't hold him there. I just haven't seen enough of Max's defensive grappling to confidently say he'd be able to fend off Oliveira, especailly when we just saw Gamrot of all people get ragdolled there. Max has good ability to get back to his feet against the cage but he likes to give up his back doing so, which you can't do against Charles. Overall I could see Max lighting Oliveira up at range at times but even if he's able to drops Charles I don't think he'd follow him to the ground, so that gives Oliveira time to recover. Max is just a bit too hittable for me to be confident in him. LMK what you guy's think.
