Benny’s Bullsh*t - Is Mokaev returning to the UFC?
After his win on the weekend, Mokaev is now the Brave FC Flyweight Champion. Now while it isn’t as big of a promotion as One FC or the PFL, it has clearly made an impact on the MMA community as people are starting to take notice of his performances. According to Mokaev and other sources, Hunter Campbell spoke to the former flyweight contender before his fight on the weekend, wishing him good luck and promising to speak to him after. Mokaev won, Hunter kept his promise. A long conversation the day after might hint that the UFC is interested in re signing Mokaev, especially with fans starting to call for the promotion to re sign him. The Flyweight division is dry right now, and with Heavyweight starting to return to normal again, it’s looking like 125lbs might start to become the least favourite division again. Dana considered scrapping the division before, and while it recovered and thrived for a while, it’s slowly losing its value and the fans’ support. Pantoja is walking through the division so badly that they had to draft in Asakura for an instant title shot, and Van is getting a title shot after getting his 2 ranked wins in the space of a month (don’t disagree with it and I hope he wins, but just saying 🤷‍♂️). The division is essentially stuck while Pantoja is the champ, which isn’t his fault at all, he’s just a great fighter who doesn’t have any real challenge. He’s been the favourite in every one of his fights in the last 5 years, and yes he’s dominant, but I think that’s more due to the fact that the challengers aren’t exactly at the top level that Pantoja expects. This is where Mokaev comes in. 7-0 in the UFC with wins over top contenders like Kape is already a great start to his growing fanbase. I’m not saying give him an instant title shot, but a win against anyone in the top 5 should really give him a chance against Pantoja. That’s probably the closest fight you can make at 125lbs by a country mile. Someone like Albazi (like MMA guru said) could be a good matchup, or maybe a former champ like Moreno instead to really test how good Mokaev really is. The only thing stopping the UFC from re signing him is his attitude, which was a problem and was the reason why he was released in the first place. To be fair at the time Dana wanted to limit the amount of wrestling in the UFC (he didn’t say it explicitly, but it’s true), so he was almost looking for an excuse to cut Mokaev. But if he’s matured and shows that he’s a good fighter to have on the roster, the UFC should 100% re sign him as soon as possible.
