In his entire career, Jorge Masvidal has never been this big of an underdog.

Earlier this week, UFC president Dana White announced that Gilbert Burns vs. Jorge Masvidal will go down at UFC 287: Pereira vs. Adesanya 2 as the co-main event. Burns has opened as a gigantic favorite in the matchup.

Jorge Masvidal fought Kamaru Usman twice and Colby Covington in his last three fights, and he wasn't even close to this big of an underdog against either of them. The biggest favorite of the fights was Kamaru Usman in the rematch, where he closed at -340. The last time Masvidal was the favorite in a fight was his fight vs. Nate Diaz which came off the back of his UFC record 5-second KO over Ben Askren, catapulting him into superstardom. 

His most recent fight was against Colby Covington, with a no-holds-barred leadup to their match. Covington brought Masvidal's wife and kids into his trash talk, and Masvidal responded just as brashly. 'Gamebred' lost the fight by unanimous decision, but it wasn't over there. The aftermath produced as much drama as the buildup, as Masvidal attacked his former opponent outside a restaurant in Miami and seemingly faced jail for an extended period. 

With it all behind him for the time being, he's set to face the biggest challenge of his career in Gilbert Burns.

Charles Oliveira is the underdog against Beniel Dariush. 

Dariush revealed in an interview with TheSchmo that the UFC is currently working on his next fight against the former Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira in May. Since the announcement, the odds have come out.

Oliveira is no stranger to the underdog role. With this fight, he’ll have been favored to lose three of his last five fights. The lone time he was the favorite as champion came at UFC 274 against Justin Gaethje. Unfortunately, he would not enter the octagon as the defending belt holder as he was stripped of the title due to a weight miss of 0.5 lbs.

Oliveira holds the record for submissions in the UFC, but he has been on the wrong side of submissions four times himself, most recently in his last fight vs. Islam Makhachev at UFC 280.

Dariush is on the 2nd-longest streak in the Lightweight division with eight wins in a row. Many believe he should have been next in line for the title regardless, but he’s willingly accepted any fight instead of holding out for a chance at the belt.

He would control the entire fight by securing an early takedown and dominating the grappling exchanges. This success allowed him to secure a first-round submission victory. Burns is now 2-2 in his last four fights and will be looking to go on his first winning streak since 2020.

Jorge Masvidal last fought at UFC 272 in March 2022, losing a dominant 5-round unanimous decision to the #2 ranked Welterweight Colby Covington. During the fight, he would struggle to keep up with Covington's pace, forcing him to slow in the later rounds. He'll be looking to rebound from the first 3-fight loss streak in his career, the other two defeats coming at the hands of the former Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman.

Alex Pereira vs. Israel Adesanya 2 Set For UFC 287

Islam Makhachev was recently in Australia doing media to promote his upcoming fight against Alexander Volaknovski at UFC 284 on February 11th. Makhachev addressed his corner as it will no longer feature his longtime friend and former Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov who has recently taken a step back from MMA coaching.

Overall, Makhachev is not concerned about not having Khabib there, although he acknowledges the benefits of having someone with his experience for guidance. He has, as mentioned, fought without Khabib in his corner before, with both even having shared a card at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi.

Makhachev is coming off his title-winning effort back at UFC 280 in October against Charles Oliveira. The win proved that Makhachev is amongst the elite in the UFC and vaulted him to a top three ranking pound for pound.

The UFC is looking to book a rematch between Raquel Pennington and Irene Aldana to headline in San Antonio on March 25th, per James Lynch.

Per Dariush in an interview with TheSchmo, the UFC is currently targeting a fight between himself and former champion Charles Oliveira for an undisclosed event in May.

Charles Oliveira would have been the UFC Lightweight Champion with 2 title defenses had his reign not been cut short at UFC 274 vs. Justin Gaethje, where he missed weight by 0.5 lbs and was consequently stripped of the title. His next fight was the same story, but with him on the other end. He faced Islam Makhachev for the vacant title but lost via 2nd-round submission after being knocked down.
