Askar Askarov revealed on his Instagram that he has been released by the UFC, per his own request.

Askar Askarov competed in the /UFC's Flyweight division where he was a staple of the top 5. His record stands at 14-1-1 and his notable wins include Alexandre Pantoja, Joseph Benavidez, and Tim Elliot.

Assalamualikum, due to the fact that my return was delayed, for health reasons and this was my last fight under my contract, I asked the UFC to release me. To which I received a positive response. First, let's put health in order, and then we'll see what's next.

While this decision came as a surprise in the moment, hindsight will show that it perhaps could have been expected. Askar's recent UFC activity has been very inconsistent and concerning. Before his last fight, he missed weight against Joseph Benavidez at UFC 259. The last 18 months have seen him pull out of 4 fights and suffer a loss to Kai Kara-France. Most recently, his fight vs. Brandon Royval was canceled during fight week due to issues making the weight.

This all makes perfect sense now that we know he was facing health concerns, although still unclear as to what they are. The Verdict Community wishes him the best of health moving forward.
