UFC Featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski has announced that he will officially be present at UFC 283 in Abu Dhabi to weigh in as the backup fighter for the vacant title bout between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev.
This means that should either party miss weight or for whatever reason be forced to withdraw, he will step in and face the fighter left behind. He must also make championship weight at the official weigh-ins even if neither side pulls out.
This is not the first time Volkanovski has gone out of his way to be a backup fighter. At UFC 240: Holloway vs. Edgar he flew from Australia to Canada just to make weight in case a fighter in the main event fell through.
There was uncertainty as to who would take the spot between Volkanovski and #6 ranked Lightweight contender Beneil Dariush who competes against #9 Mateusz Gamrot.
