Dan Hooker is a former opponent of Islam Makhachev and a close friend and training partner of his most recent opponent, Alexander Volkanovski. He had some harsh words for the UFC Lightweight champion regarding his win over Volkanovski at UFC 284 in Perth this past weekend.
Hooker refers to using an I.V. needle to rehydrate one's body after cutting weight. This practice has been banned for years in the UFC, and one can serve up to two years of suspension for it.
Hooker has given no base for the accusation, but it is known that the circumstances around Islam's rehydration were not ideal for this fight and may have affected his performance. His coach, Javier Mendes, revealed to Submission Radio that the weight cut this time was harder than their last fight against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. Coupled with the fact that fighters had 12 hours less to rehydrate after weigh-ins than usual, Islam would likely feel significant effects from it.
Hooker and Makhachev met at UFC 267 in 2021, where he joined Drew Dober and Thiago Moises on Islam's then 3-fight finishing streak via first-round kimura.
He's not the only person to call out Islam for alleged cheating after fighting him. Bobby Green notoriously went on The Joe Rogan Experience, where he accused several fighters, including Islam Makhachev and Rafael Fiziev, who have beaten him, of using steroids.
Islam's performance in this fight was significantly different from his last 11 wins. Was this because of the weight cut and rehydration, or was Volkaovski just that good? Or, do you believe it was because Khabib Nurmagomdeov didn't corner him? Let us know in the comments below.
