At the UFC 282 post-fight press conference, Dana White revealed that Glover Teixeira vs. Jamahal Hill is a done deal for the vacant Light Heavyweight title at UFC 283 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, on January 21st.
This 5-round title fight takes place in the Light Heavyweight (205 lbs) division.
Glover Teixeira holds a professional record of 33-8-0 and is currently ranked #2. His notable wins include Jan Blachowicz, Thiago Santos, and Anthony Smith.
Jamahal Hill holds a professional record of 11-1-1 and is currently ranked #7. His notable wins include Johnny Walker, Thiago Santos, and Jimmy Crute.
Glover Teixeira last fought at UFC 275 against Jiri Prochazka where he lost his title via 5th-round submission. The fight won 2022's Fight of The Year award and was one of the best comebacks in title fight history from the challenger.
The pair were set to rematch tonight at UFC 282 but just a week before the event, Prochazka suffered a serious shoulder injury and vacated his title. The co-main event, Blachowicz vs. Ankalaev, was promoted to the main event and became an undisputed title fight.
As we now know, the two fought to a draw, leaving the division with no leader.
Jamahal Hill's most recent appearance came in the form of a 4th-round TKO finish over Thiago Santos in August. He's riding a 3-fight knockout streak after suffering his first career loss to Paul Craig at UFC 263. It is to note that Hill was booked against Anthony Smith but has been pulled from the bout to face Teixeira.
No one could have expected a draw in the title bout, nor this next announcement. With the former champion out of the picture for the foreseeable future, where do Blachowicz and Ankalaev fit into this?
