An interview that UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev did before his first title defense at UFC 284 against Alexander Volkanovski surfaced recently. In it, Makhachev told fans about his mother's opinion on his fighting career.

She doesn't like seeing people hit each other. When I came home [after winning the title] . . . she said, 'You're champion now, wrap it up. Khabib listened to his mother. When will you listen to yours?
- Islam Makhachev's mother wants him to stop fighting and come home full time.

To the relief of fans, Makhachev revealed that he's not done yet, and still plans to defend his title, much like his brother Khabib Nurmagomedov did.

He is well on his way to surpassing the legacy of Khabib, the consensus Lightweight G.O.A.T and one of the greatest mixed martial artists ever.

Makhachev's legacy already consists of wins over the #1 Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world, Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, and the #3 Pound-for-Pound and former Lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira.

His recent finishing spree includes Dan Hooker, Thiago Moises, Drew Dober, and Bobby Green. The odds are his next fight will take place against the winner of Charles Oliveira vs. Beneil Dariush, which has been booked for UFC 288 on May 6th.

Makhachev has consistently related his career to the brother figure we all know, Khabib Nurmagomedov. The only difference between them is the undefeated record, as Islam has suffered a single loss to Adriano Martins. Despite this, many see his career potential on the way to surpassing that of his dear friend.
