It was a quick night at PFL 2, with 3 out of the 5 fights on the main card ending in the 1st round. The 2022 season has started to shape up and we saw a few fighters that are strong candidates to make it to the PFL Championship this year. Let’s take a look.
After winning the PFL Heavyweight Championship and $1 Million in 2021, Bruno Cappelozza is back this year to do it again. At this point, it’s been well documented that Cappelozza found out his father had died immediately after winning the PFL Championship last year. This motivated him more this year and you could see it in his first fight of the 2022 regular season against Stuart Austin. Cappelozza finished Austin by 1st round TKO which earned him 6 points. This put Cappelozza in a prime position to advance to the PFL Playoffs.
If you’ve been following us on social media, you know that we think Renan Ferreira is a major prospect in the Heavyweight division. He’s 6’8 and 253 lbs of lean muscle. He hasn’t had a real loss since 2016 and he’s now finished 8 of his 9 wins by stoppage. Ferreira made history against Jamelle Jones at PFL 2, as he finished him by knockout in just 25 seconds, earning him the fastest knockout in PFL history. Many are picking Ferreira to make it all the way to the PFL Championship this year. He took a cage-side seat during the main event as he watched Bruno Cappelozza finish Stuart Austin. A fight between Ferreira and Cappelozza would be a dream scenario this year as they’re two of the most dangerous Heavyweights on the roster.
From 2018 to 2019, Lance Palmer won 2 PFL Championships and $2 Million. It seemed as if Palmer would become the face of the PFL for years to come but that all changed in 2021 when the PFL returned after a 1-year break due to the pandemic. He failed to win a single fight and attributed it to him not wanting to be there. He had a chance at starting 2022 with a clean slate when he took on last year’s PFL Championship finalist Chris Wade. Palmer lost the fight by unanimous decision and has now 3 straight losses on his record.
A featherweight clash between Brendan Loughnane and Ryoji Kudo came to an anti-climatic an end after an accidental clash of heads opened up a gash on the forehead of Ryoji Kudo in the 3rd round. Since the fight was stopped after the halfway point of the 3rd round, it was a scoreable round for the judges. Loughnane won the fight on a technical decision. Prior to the headbutt, it was a competitive fight tht saw Kudo become the first fighter to every drop Loughnane with strikes. Many are expecting Brendan Loughnane to win the PFL Featherweight title this year.
After losing in the 2021 PFL Playoffs, Denis Goltsov bounced back with a big win against Cody Goodale. He finished Goodale by 1st round TKO and which earned him 6 points in the rankings. This years Heavyweight division is already shaping up to very competitive. There were 3 Heavyweights that earned 6 points because of 1st round knockouts last night.
