Raquel Pennington has been quietly rising through the ranks of the Bantamweight division since 2020. After suffering a decision defeat to Holly Holm, "Rocky" has won five straight and now holds the #2 spot in the division. Her last bout was supposed to be a title eliminator against Irene Aldana, but an injury in the main event of UFC 289 forced Juliana Pena out of her matchup vs. Amanda Nunes. Aldana took the short-notice fight, leaving Pennington on the sidelines, waiting for her opportunity. Now, she looks to challenge for the title for the second time in her career, with the first being a TKO loss to Nunes in 2018.
Mayra Bueno Silva is coming off a frustrating No Contest against Holly Holm. Bueno Silva impressed many fans in her first UFC main event, submitting Holly Holm with a buggy choke. However, a positive test for ritalinic acid, which Silva claimed was for her ADHA, overturned the win to a no contest. She now looks to continue her unbeaten streak heading into this title shot and will look to outgrapple Pennington in order to claim the title.
Though unconfirmed, this bout will likely serve as the co-main event for UFC 297. As a member of the Verdict Community, let us know your predictions in the comments below.
