Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski produced the front-runner for Fight of The Year in one of the most epic title fights of all time at UFC 284. Despite losing a unanimous decision, Volkanovski held onto his pound-for-pound king status as a reward for his efforts.

There are many differing opinions on the matter, with both ESPN and MMAFighting placing Makhachev at the top of their individual Pound-for-Pound rankings.

Islam's last 5 fights are wins over Thiago Moises, Dan Hooker, Bobby Green, Charles Oliveira, and Alexander Volkanovski. He earned the #2 spot prior to this fight when he defeated Oliveira at udC 280.

Alexander Volkanovski's last 5 fights are wins over Max Holloway, Brian Ortega, The Korean Zombie, Max Holloway again, and his recent loss to Islam Makhachev.
