Edition 69March 29, 2024

The 2024 PFL Season kicks off next week. Buckle up for some more MMA.

1
UFC Announces First Event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Who is headlining? The main event will be a five-round Middleweight bout between Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev, confirmed by Dana White as a title eliminator. The card will also feature Sergei Pavlovich vs. Alexander Volkov, Johnny Walker vs. Volkan Oezdemir, and the return of Sharabutdin Magomedov.

When is it? UFC on ABC 6 will occur on June 22nd at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The event was initially planned for March 2nd but was rescheduled due to the card's lack of star power.

2
Brandon Moreno Will Take a Break From MMA

Why? The former Flyweight Champion took to social media to announce that he's been struggling mentally after suffering his first two-fight losing streak since 2018. He will take time away from the sport to focus on himself and decompress from the sport.

When will he return? Moreno didn't mention a specific date for his return, but he asked MMA fans to be patient and wait for him. Moreno specified this isn't goodbye, and he isn't retiring.

3
Igor Severino Has Been Cut From The UFC

Who? Igor Severino was an undefeated Brazillian Flyweight prospect who won his Contender Series bout via second-round TKO. He faced Andre Lima on the prelims of last week's UFC event and lost via disqualification.

Why? Severino bit Lima hard on his bicep, causing Chris Tognoni to halt the action. After seeing the severity of the bite, he called the fight off entirely. Severino was later cut from the promotion after just one fight.

4
Dana White Promises "Badass" PPV For The UK

When will it be? The UFC has not officially confirmed the next UK PPV, but multiple unofficial reports believe the event will go down in July in Manchester, England.

Who will be on the card? Considering Tom Aspinall is from Atherton, Greater Manchester, it seems plausible he will defend his Interim Championship on the card. Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad is also a strong possibility for the card, as is the return of Paddy Pimblett and Arnold Allen.

5
Israel Adesanya "Ready To Go" For Dricus du Plessis Fight

Details: Eugene Bareman said in an interview that Adesanya has been ready to go, and now, they're just waiting on the date. The team has always believed Adesanya's next fight will be for the title.

UFC 305 Announcement: The UFC confirmed they'll return to Perth, Australia for UFC 305. This could be the date Adesanya has been waiting for, as his last fight was also in Australia.

6
Luke Rockhold Will Make Karate Combat Debut

Where's Luke Rockhold been? Former UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold retired from professional MMA at UFC 278 in 2022, but that hasn't stopped him from other fights outside the octagon. He previously faced Mike Perry in Bare Knuckle Boxing, where he lost due to retirement in round 2.

What's next? Rockhold will be headlining Karate Combat 45 against GLORY Kickboxing and Bellator veteran Joe Schilling. Karate Combat has seen many MMA fighters transition to it, including Anthony Pettis, Benson Henderson, and Sam Alvey.

7
Judges Have Been Confirmed For UFC 300 Main and Co-Main

Who? The main event of UFC 300 is Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill, and the co-main event will be Zhang Weili vs. Yan Xiaonan. The judges for those fights include familiar names Derek Cleary, Mike Bell, Ben Cartlidge, and Chris Lee, meaning no Sal D'Amato.

Is this good? It's tough to say. These judges have plenty of experience in professional MMA scoring but have given some questionable scorecards in the past. An example is Chirs Lee scoring Paddy Pimblett vs. Jared Gordon in favor of Pimblett.
