Edition 43June 30, 2023

A big shoutout to Ilia Topuria who looked like a prodigy against Josh Emmett. It looks like he'll be the first undefeated fighter to challenge for the UFC Featherweight title since Brian Ortega did so in 2018.

1
Daniel Cormier believes that Jon Jones shouldn't be nominated for an ESPY for the 'Best Fighter' this year

His argument: DC believes that Jones shouldn't be nominated because he's only fought once this year, while the rest of the nominees have competed more than once. This is an award that Cormier has won himself in 2019. Leon Edwards, Islam Makhachev, and Amanda Nunes are the other nominees this year.

The other argument: Jones' win against Ciryl Gane carries more historical significance than the wins of Edwards, Makhachev, and Nunes in the last year. Becoming the Heavyweight Champion with ease after dominating Light Heavyweight for years is a special accomplishment.

Kevin Lee thinks it's stupid that the UFC is still holding events at the APEX

What did he say? Lee said it's stupid that the UFC is still holding events at the APEX and that the Pandemic is over. He said it's a different kind of energy fighting in front of thousands of people screaming, and he wants to compete in that environment again.

What's interesting about this: Kevin Lee's fight against Charles Oliveira in March of 2020 was the first UFC event affected by the Pandemic. The world shut down that week, and the UFC made the call that the event would go on, but inside of an empty arena in Brasília, Brazil.

3
The UFC is hosting a special Fight Night event for Mexican Independence Day

What's happening? Dana White announced that the UFC is holding a Fight Night card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 16th to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. It's a free fight night card headlined by Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko 2 for the UFC Flyweight title and features Shavkhat Rakhmonov vs. Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event.

Who else is on the card? The UFC is still building the rest of the card, but you can expect a lot more Mexican fighters to compete on it, given it's a card built for Mexican Independence Day.

4
The PFL swapped in Shane Burgos for Natan Schulte for the 2023 Playoffs

Why? Natan Schulte defeated his friend Raush Manfio in a lackluster fight where they both held back because they didn't want to hurt each other. Schulte is the Godfather of Manfio's daughter, so this isn't a situation where these two are cool with each other in passing. They're legitimate friends.

The consequences: Schulte was supposed to advance to the playoffs with the win. That didn't happen because the PFL suspended Schulte because he did "not meet the standards which all PFL fighters agree to uphold in competition." Shane Burgos, who originally didn't have enough points to get into the Playoffs, will now take Schulte's spot in the Playoffs. Burgos will take on Clay Collard, who's arguably the most exciting striker in the PFL.

5
Chael Sonnen said that Mark Zuckerberg has agreed to fight Elon Musk at UFC 300

What did he say? Sonnen said that Zuckerberg called him and told him that he's agreed to fight Elon Musk at UFC 300 after Zuckerberg saw a tweet from Ariel Helwani that Sonnen was appearing on his show.

Should you believe this? It's Chael Sonnen, so probably not, but Dana White keeps saying that this is a fight that both Zuckerberg and Elon are dead serious about.

6
Henry Cejudo has pulled out of his fight against Marlon Vera

What happened? Cejudo tore his right shoulder and will no longer be fighting Marlon Vera on August 19th. The recovery time for this injury is 6-8 weeks which means he could still fight this year.

Will the fight be rebooked? Probably not. Cejudo didn’t show any interest in rebooking a fight against Vera when he announced the injury on his YouTube channel. Instead, he teased fights against Merab Dvalishvili and Brandon Moreno.

7
Shavkhat Rakhmonov's sister will compete on Dana White's Contender Series

Who, what, and where? Shavkhat's sister, Sora Rakhmonova, will compete Dana White's Contender Series on September 26th in Las Vegas against Ernesta Kareckaite. This fight takes place 10 days after Shavkhat fights Kelvin Gastelum. If she looks impressive, you can expect her to be signed by the UFC immediately.

Is she good? She's 25 years old and has a pro record of 4-1 with 3 finishes. She's looked good as of late, finishing two straight fights by TKO. We'll find out how good she really is real soon.
