Edition 57October 13, 2023

The Fight Forum has been on fire this week. Check out the discussion of how the Verdict Community scored Islam Makhachev vs. Alex Volkanovski 1.

1
The UFC and USADA have ended their relationship

What happened? USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart released a statement on Wednesday stating they will no longer be overseeing the UFC's anti-doping program starting on January 1, 2024, after the UFC elected to part ways. USADA was upset about the UFC's stance on Conor McGregor and whether the promotion would exempt him from being in the pool for the mandatory 6 months before returning to action.

The future: The UFC will be replacing USADA with the company 'Drug Free Sport International', which has conducted testing for the NBA, NFL, NHL, WNBA, NASCAR, and many other pro sports leagues.

2
Islam Makhachev vs. Alex Volkanovski is official

What happened to Charles Oliveira? He suffered a major cut above his eyebrow during the 5th round of the final sparring session of his training camp. This cut forced him to withdraw from his scheduled rematch against Islam Makhachev at UFC 294.

Volkanovski's plan: He's fighting Islam Makhachev on 11 days' notice in enemy territory. He said, "If anyone can beat Makhachev off the couch, it's me."

3
Kamaru Usman replaced Paulo Costa to fight Khamzat Chimaev

What happened to Paulo Costa? He suffered a nasty staph infection on his arm that has required three surgeries so far. He was re-hospitalized on Wednesday and wouldn't have gotten medically cleared.

The stake: Dana White confirmed to Pat McAfee that the winner of Khamzat Chimaev vs. Kamaru Usman will challenge Sean Strickland for the Middleweight title, barring any injuries.

4
Conor McGregor is back in the USADA testing pool

When can he return? If he remains in the testing pool for the 'required' 6 months, he'll be cleared to compete on April 11, 2024. But all bets are off now that USADA is out of the picture starting January 1. The UFC could bring him whenever they want.

What this caused: USADA blamed the Conor McGregor situation for the falling out with the UFC. This pissed off Dana White, who said that "shit is about to hit the fan."

5
Derrick Lewis will fight Jailton Almeida

Curtis Blaydes? He withdrew because he's dealing with injuries that won't heal in time for November 4. He's planning on taking time off.

The threat: Jailton Almeida is a dangerous fight for Derrick Lewis, who will be competing in Brazil for the first time in his career in the middle of enemy territory.

6
Bellator is in an unstable spot

The latest: Bellator 301 is taking place on November 17, and Showtime is speaking with the potential 'new owners' to cover the costs for the event. Showtime has increasingly started to pull away resources from Bellator.

What's next: It looks like the PFL is the only bidder. We should know what's happening by Bellator 301, as it doesn't look like Showtime wants to burn more money on the promotion.

7
The UFC is hosting an event in Saudi Arabia

When? The event is taking place in partnership with the Saudi General Entertainment Authority on March 2, 2024. You can attribute the merger between the UFC and WWE to this new relationship, as the WWE has been hosting premium live events from Saudi for years.

Implications: The TKO stock dropped 16% when the PFL announced they received an investment from the Saudi Arabian government. It appears that the PFL won't be the exclusive partners for MMA with the UFC in the mix.
