Edition 47July 28, 2023

Season 2 of our fantasy leagues kicks off on Saturday, starting with UFC 291. The Season will end at the final UFC PPV of the year.

1
The PFL is teasing a big announcement

The tease: PFL Founder Donn Davis tweeted that there will be a big announcement in August that will change the global market of MMA.

What could it be? It looks like it'll be either an acquisition of Bellator or a new US broadcast rights deal in 2024. The PFL's broadcast deal in the US is set to expire at the end of the year.

2
Michael Bisping believes Tom Aspinall can't hold a candle to Jon Jones

Bisping's thoughts: He believes that Tom Aspinall would finish Jon Jones that Aspinall did Marcin Tybura. Aspinall finished Tybura by knockout in 73 seconds this past weekend.

The betting line: BetOnline has Jon Jones as a -200 favorite against Aspinall in a possible fight, contrary to what Bisping believes.

3
Darren Till and Ben Askren are about to 1v1

What does that mean? Till and Askren will compete in a 1v1 on Verdict Tournaments for UFC 291. The person with the most XP won at the end of the night wins $550. Till is representing Blockasset, while Askren is representing Verdict.

The favorite: They were supposed to fight in 2019, but the fight never came to fruition. The grudge match is finally happening on Verdict ;)

4
The UFC is having issues booking a main event for the Sydney PPV

The issues: Israel Adesanya wants to headline the card on September 10th, but Dricus Du Plessis is injured. With DDP out, Adesanya wants to fight Sean Strickland, but the UFC is having trouble coming to an agreement with Strickland.

The likely outcome: Adesanya has always stepped up for the UFC, so you can expect the UFC to step up for him. A fight against Strickland makes all the sense in the world right now, given the circumstances. You can expect the UFC to make the fight with Strickland.

5
Tony Ferguson doesn't plan on retiring any time soon

His reasoning: Tony said during media day this week that he believes he's barely hitting his prime and hasn't even considered retiring. He feels sharper than ever and is aiming to become Champion in 5 fights.

What's at stake? Tony is in danger of losing his 6th straight fight when he takes on Bobby Green this weekend. If he loses, the UFC is going to have to make a difficult decision on whether or not they want to keep offering him fights.

6
Vicente Luque was cleared to fight after suffering a brain bleed

What happened? Luque suffered a brain bleed in his knockout loss against Geoff Neal last August and was medically suspended for 1 year. He was required to submit clearance from a neurologist and a neurosurgeon and a new MRI to the Nevada Athletic Commission.

What's next? He's headlining the August 12th UFC Fight Night event against Rafael dos Anjos. The NAC approved Luque and granted him a license to fight for 1 year. If he fights again in Nevada, he'll likely be asked to submit additional medical testing to confirm he is healthy to compete.

7
Justin Gaethje thinks Jorge Masvidal will hate wrapping the belt around him

The conflict: Jorge Masvidal is a friend and training partner of Dustin Poirier and is picking him to defeat Justin Gaethje.

How Gaethje feels: He feels that Masvidal will hate wrapping the title around him if he wins, and Gaethje loves that.
