How to Score

MMA is scored using the 10-Point Must System. The fighter who wins a round receives 10 points; their opponent receives 9 or fewer. Each round is scored independently — here's how to call it.

Scoring a round

10-10When both fighters have competed for the duration of the round and there is no difference or advantage between either fighter.
10-9When a fighter wins the round by a close margin.
10-8When a fighter wins the round by a large margin.
10-7When a fighter completely overwhelms their opponent in Effective Striking and/or Grappling and stoppage is warranted.

What the judges weigh

When deciding who won a round, work through these in order. You only move to the next factor when the one above it is even.

1. Effective Striking & Grappling
The primary factor. Effective striking is judged by the number of legal strikes landed and their impact. Effective grappling is judged by takedowns, reversals, and the threat or completion of submissions — weighted by the damage and control they create. This is assessed first, every round.
2. Effective Aggression
Only considered when striking and grappling are even. Aggressively making a fight happen counts — but moving forward without landing meaningful offense does not. Pressure has to produce results.
3. Fighting Area Control
The final tiebreaker, considered only when the criteria above are dead even. This is dictating the pace, location, and position of the fight — controlling where and how the action takes place inside the cage.
