The PFL is back with another great card this Friday, featuring the welterweights and the lightweights. This card, is headlined by a welterweight matchup between 2022 welterweight champion  Sadibou Sy and Jarrah Al-Silawi. Also on the card, Magomed Magomedkerimov will look to start the 2023 season off on the right foot against Ben Egli, Natan Schultze will take on Stevie Ray, Raush Manfio will meet Alexander Martinez, and Shane Burgos will make his PFL debut against former UFC fighter and PFL champion Olivier Aubin-Mercier. 

Let's take a look at how each fighter weighed in.

PFL 3 Weigh-In Results

The UFC is returning to Kansas City, Mo., for the first time in nearly four years with a great main event that headlines the card. Former UFC Featherweight Champion and No. 2 ranked contender Max Holloway will take on the No. 4 ranked contender Arnold Allen. This Featherweight main event is significant for both men and has title implications. 

This card has a great co-main event as well as Edson Barboza and Billy Quarantillo will battle it out at 145 lbs. Dustin Jacoby will also compete on the main card alongside Pedro Munhoz, Clay Guida and others. The main card is filled with fantastic fights and incredible talent. These are my predictions for the five main card fights. 

## Max Holloway vs. Arnold Allen

The former Featherweight champion wants to get back into the win column over a formidable opponent in Arnold Allen. Holloway is coming off a brutal loss to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 276. It was a one-sided affair and had many fight fans in shock with how the fight went. That was the most damage Holloway had absorbed ever in his career, and he did the right thing by taking appropriate time off to heal and rest. He is back in the main event against Allen, who is on a ten-fight winning streak. Allen is a devastating striker who has knockout power in both hands. He is coming off a win against Calvin Kattar that unfortunately had to be stopped due to a knee injury to Kattar. The previous victory was over Dan Hooker via TKO when he landed 49 significant strikes halfway through the first round.

A stat to keep in mind for this terrific main event is Holloway going against southpaw fighters, like Allen, is 0-3 in his career. Those three losses were to Conor McGregor and twice to Dustin Poirier. So the most significant adjustment for Holloway will be setting up traps against an aggressive southpaw fighter to get the victory. Allen has been on a tear but has not fought anyone quite like Holloway in his young career.

## Edson Barboza vs. Billy Quarantillo

The co-main event has all the makings to be the fight of the night and for both men to earn that $50,000 bonus at the end of the night. One of the most devastating strikers the UFC has ever had makes his return as Edson Barboza takes on Billy Quarantillo. Since 2020, Barboza has a 2-3 record in the Featherweight division, but the split decision loss to Dan Ige could have gone either way. The Brazilian's knockout victory over Shane Burgos was his first since defeating Dan Hooker in 2018, and was his standout performance in the division. In contrast, Quarantillo just defeated Alexander Hernandez in his lone match of 2022 by TKO in the second round. After being on the losing end of a classic back-and-forth fight against Burgos, in which they landed a combined 357 significant strikes, Quarantillo put up a tremendous comeback performance. Quarantillo has an overall record of 5-2 in the UFC and looks to get his sixth win in the organization. 

The most significant difference in this fight will be the five-inch reach advantage Barboza has against Quarantillo. Barboza is already a dangerous striker, and having a five-inch reach advantage doesn't help Quarantillo's case in winning this fight.

## Dustin Jacoby vs. Azamat Murzakanov

Dustin Jacoby will try to get back on track after losing to Khalil Rountree by a razor-thin split decision in October of 2022. He had previously won six of seven fights, including a split draw, during his second run in the UFC. Since getting signed after appearing on Dana White's Contender Series in 2020, Jacoby has had three first-round finishes and is known as one of the best kickboxers in the Light Heavyweight division. Conversely, Azamat Murzakanov has an undefeated record of 12-0 and is a lethal finisher. He has a 2-0 record in the UFC, as he made an impression on DWCS in 2021 by finishing Matheus Scheffel. Since then, he has also defeated Tafon Nchukwi and Devin Clark in the UFC. 

Jacoby will be six inches taller and have a seven-inch reach advantage against Murzakanov. The kickboxer will utilize these physical advantages to his benefit as the more experienced fighter in this bout.

## Tanner Boser vs. Ion Cutelaba

This weekend in Kansas City, Tanner Boser will compete for the first time at Light Heavyweight when he takes on veteran Ion Cutelaba. Boser hasn't competed at Light Heavyweight in nearly a decade, but he's been hinting at it in his last several fights. Watching how the former heavyweight looks and performs after moving down a division will be intriguing. Boser must rely on his experience and knockout power the night of the fight. 

Cutelaba enters the fight to put an end to a three-fight losing streak. The "Hulk" has only won once in his last seven fights, going 1-5-1 during that time. Cutelaba has been susceptible to being knocked out as of late, and it only plays to the advantage of Boser.

## Pedro Munhoz vs. Chris Gutiérrez

The Bantamweight division is arguably the best in the UFC. This fight between Pedro Munhoz and Chris Gutiérrez only proves how much depth the division has with these talented fighters. Munhoz is making his return to the octagon after his "No Contest" fight against Sean O'Malley. Munhoz has lost four of his last five fights, despite the fact that they had all been against former champions. In the blue corner, Gutierrez had a highlight-reel performance against Frankie Edgar with a first-round knockout in November of 2022. After defeating Danaa Batgerel with a spinning backfist, he earned two incredible knockout wins. He has won all eight of his fights, with one resulting in a draw. Gutiérrez hasn't dropped a fight since Raoni Barcelos submitted him in his first appearance in the UFC in 2018. Munhoz is a tough opponent for anyone, but he tends to get hit too often, and Gutiérrez will take advantage of this the night of the fight.

## Clay Guida vs. Rafa García

Clay Guida, who made his professional debut over 20 years ago, is still winning fights today and will want to make it two straight wins when he takes on Rafa Garcia. Guida outperformed Scott Holtzman in December of 2022, winning via split decision. It would be Guida's first winning streak since 2017 if he were to win against Garcia, but it will be no easy task. Garcia rebounded from a rough start in which he lost two decisions and then prevailed in winning three of his next four fights, with his lone defeat being via decision to Drakkar Klose. This will be a classic fight between two takedown-heavy fighters as they both average over three takedowns per 15 minutes. That said, the veteran will utilize his experience in this fight.

UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Allen Predictions

After an unforgettable UFC 287 card, the UFC will return to Kansas City six years from the day it held its first event in 2017. On that UFC on Fox card, Demetrious Johnson defeated Wilson Reis with a third-round armbar. Five UFC fighters previously held, or fought for a title on that card. 

This KC card is stacked from top to bottom, filled with some amazing fights that will lead up to one of the most anticipated fights of 2023, a main event featuring Max Holloway and Arnold Allen. 

Let's take a look at the card as it appears on Verdict. 

## Max Holloway vs Arnold Allen

With UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski defending his title against interim champion Yair Rodriguez later this year at UFC 290, there are extremely high stakes for this fight, as the winner could have a serious say in the direction the division goes in next. Max Holloway is 0-3 against Volkanovski but remains the number-one-ranked Featherweight in the world. 

On the other hand, Arnold Allen is a serious threat to that goal. At 19-1, Allen has surged up the 145 ranks and has won twelve fights in a row. Wins over Calvin Kattar, Dan Hooker, Sodiq Yusuff, and Makwan Amirkhani have gotten Allen up to the number four-ranked Featherweight in the world, and a win over Holloway will put him next in line for a title shot. These are two of the best Featherweights on the planet, so this main event is expected to be one of the best fights of the year. 

## Edson Barboza vs Billy Quarantillo

Intimate MMA fans should be very excited about this co-main event, featuring a future UFC Hall of Famer and an up-and-coming fighter who just knows how to entertain. Edson Barboza vs Billy Quarantillo is the perfect co-main event for this card. Edson is one of the best strikers the UFC has ever seen. Although he is in the later stages of his career and has recently found a home at featherweight, Barboza is still dangerous and presents the toughest test of Quarantillo's young career. Billy Q is coming off of a huge win against Alexander Hernandez back at UFC 282 and lost a close Fight of The Night with Shane Burgos in a fight where nobody lost. This is a very entertaining matchup, and if Quarantillo can get the win, he'll find himself with a number next to his name the following week, and some great fights in his future as he climbs the Featherweight rankings. 

## Dustin Jacoby vs Azamat Murzakanov

This is another great fight on the card in the Light Heavyweight division featuring Dustin Jacoby and Azamat Murzakanov. Jacoby and Murzakanov are ranked #13 and #15, respectively, and are looking to move up the division with a win. Jacoby is an established kickboxer who fought the likes of Alex Pereira in GLORY, while Murzakanov is a 34-year-old rookie in the Light Heavyweight division, who is 2-0 with two knockouts in his young UFC career thus far. Both are great strikers, and this fight should be a standup fight that has a great chance of ending in a KO. 

## Tanner Boser vs Ion Cutelaba

Another firefight on the card, Tanner Boser and Ion Cutelaba are set to appear on this main card, where someone's likely going to get finished. Both men combine for 23 knockouts in their professional careers. These two bring a different level of ferociousness and power to their game, and I'm expecting both men to collide in a big way. 

## Pedro Munhoz vs Chris Gutierrez

This might be the hardcore MMA fan's favorite fight on the card. Chris Gutierrez is in the midst of his rise at 135 pounds, and he has a great opportunity to get a win over a staple of the division, Pedro Munhoz. This fight should deliver and has a great chance of being awarded the Fight of The Night.  

## Clay Guida vs Rafa Garcia

This card will feature a sixth fight on the main card featuring Clay Guida, who will be fighting for the 58th time in his professional career, and Mexican sensation Rafa Garcia who is looking for a big win against a notable UFC name.  This should be a very fun fight to kick off the main card. 

Overall, this is a fantastic main card with a lot of action on the prelims as well. Brandon Royval and Matheus Nicolau will likely fight to determine who the next title challenger at 125 is, Bill Algeo will fight TJ Brown, and Zak Cummings and Ed Herman will slug it out in a battle between two UFC veterans.

Jake Paul is set to make his return to the boxing ring this August against former UFC star Nate Diaz in Dallas, Texas. Paul has opened as a large favorite for the bout that is expected to take place on August 5th.

Today's announcement came with many rumors about Jake Paul's next opponent circling. Jake Paul is coming off a split-decision loss to Tommy Fury earlier this year; before that, he has wins over Anderson Silva and Tyron Woodley. Nate Diaz makes his boxing debut here after fighting out of his UFC contract by submitting Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 last September.

## Jaqueline Amorim vs. Sam Hughes

**Result:** Sam Hughes def. Jaqueline Amorim via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

**Division:** Women's strawweight

**Referee:** Andrew Glenn

Hughes came out as the aggressor early in round one, with Amorim landing a couple of takedowns and threatening with submissions. Amorim seemed close to getting a rear-naked choke toward the end of the round, but Hughes managed to escape. In the second round, the momentum swung in Hughes' favor as she was more successful in defending takedowns and landed more strikes, meaning the fight was likely 1-1 going into the third. In the third round, Hughes seemingly found her target easier, landing the biggest shots of the fight. Amorim looked tired and desperate as Hughes started to pile on the pressure. A clear round for Hughes would give her the unanimous decision victory with the judges.


## Steve Garcia vs. Shayilan Nuerdanbieke

**Result:** Steve Garcia def. Shayilan Nuerdanbieke via KO (body shot, then ground-and-pound) – Round 2, 0:36.

**Division:** Featherweight

**Referee:** Larry Folsom

Early in the first, Gracia, unfortunately, lands a low blow to Nuerdanbieke. As soon as the fight resumes, Nuerdanbieke lands a colossal right dropping Garcia, and pounces. Garcia is able to recover. Nuerdanbieke controls the rest of the round, implementing another takedown. With seconds left, Garcia wobbles Nuerdanbieke, who clinches and survives the round. Picking up where he left off, Garica lands a clean combo followed by a body shot that drops his opponent, followed by a ground and pound for the TKO victory. Excellent finish from Garcia. 


## Ignacio Bahamondes vs. Trey Ogden

**Result:** Ignacio Bahamondes def. Trey Ogden via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

**Division:** 160lb catchweight

**Referee:** Andre Glenn

Both fighters seem reserved as the fight starts, Bahamondes lands many successful leg kicks, and the damage adds up throughout the round. Round 2 is more of the same, not much action, and Bahamondes invests in the leg kicks. The crowd's boos can be heard as they show their discontent. With very little resistance from Ogden, Bahamondes is able to pick him apart and go to town with his leg kicks—minimal action throughout the fight but a clear winner in Bahamondes.

## Cynthia Calvillo vs. Loopy Godinez

**Result:** Loopy Godinez def. Cynthia Calvillo via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

**Division:** Women's strawweight

**Referee:** Larry Folsom

Godinez looks to pressure her opponent at the beginning of the first round. Cavillo shows a good jab before completing a takedown. Calvillo is able to control Godinez on the ground and looks to be the clear winner of the first round. The second and third rounds are spent on the feet, where both fighters have success. Cavillo using her jab well, lands some powerful hooks. At the same time, Godinez returns with some powerful hooks of her own. A close fight that could have gone either way favors Godinez via split decision with the judges. 

## Gerald Meerschaert vs. Joe Pyfer

**Result:** Joe Pyfer def. Gerald Meerschaert via TKO (ground-and-pound) – Round 1, 3:15

**Division:** Middleweight

**Referee:** Marc Goddard

Meerschaert circles his opponent and lands some leg kicks; Pyfer seems to be taking his time and pressures Meerschaert onto his back foot. Before long, Pyfer lands a huge left hand, drops Meerschaert, and ends the fight with a ground and pound. By far, Pyfer's biggest career win and a huge scalp to add in just his second UFC fight. 

## Luana Pinheiro vs. Michelle Waterson-Gomez

**Result:** Luana Pinheiro def. Michelle Waterson-Gomez via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

**Division:** Women's strawweight

**Referee:** Larry Folsom


With little action, Waterson seemed to control most of the first round, but she controlled the distance well and pressured her opponent. Pinheiro had some success late in the round and wobbled Waterson, who clinched until the bell rang. Pinheiro has more success and is landing the heavier shots throughout the second. A mixture of powerful hooks and leg kicks stun Waterson on numerous occasions. A close third round could sway the fight either way; a slightly different striking affair compared to the second, with no real damaging blows landing. A close fight that could have gone either way goes to Pinheiro via split decision.

## Kelvin Gastelum vs. Chris Curtis

**Result:** Kelvin Gastelum def. Chris Curtis via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-37)

**Division:** Middleweight

**Referee:** Marc Goddard

Gastelum comes out and sets the pace as the aggressor. He lands excellent leg kicks and uses his movement well to cause Curtis problems. As the round progresses, both men pick each other apart with great shots. The second round starts just as the first finishes, both men swinging with bad intentions and testing each other's chin. Gastelum drops Curtis, but he recovers, and as the round continues, both men go toe to toe in a total war. Like the previous two, round three is also high-paced and high-action. Both men have success, but Gastelum seems to be sharper than his opponent and takes the victory in a great fight. 

## Christian Rodriguez vs. Raul Rosas Jr.

**Result:** Christian Rodriguez def. Raul Rosas Jr. via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

**Division:** Bantamweight

**Referee:** Keith Peterson

Rosas emerges like a bat out of hell, shooting for the takedown immediately. Rosas manages to take the back of Rodriguez while still standing, it looks close as Rosas keeps squeezing, but Rodriguez keeps calm and gets out toward the end of the round. Like the first, Rosas comes out intensely but is unsuccessful with his takedown attempts. Rodriguez defends well while keeping his cool as the tide of the fight turns in his favor. He has Rosas in trouble this round as he dominates him on the ground. In the third, Rosas is noticeably tired and fights a more desperate approach. Again Rodriguez is calm and collected and controls the remainder of the fight. Rodriguez gives Rosas his first loss and takes the victory via unanimous decision.

## Kevin Holland vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio

**Result:** Kevin Holland def. Santiago Ponzinibbio via KO (left hook) – Round 3, 3:16.

**Division:** Welterweight

**Referee:** Dan Miragliotta

The fight starts with a closely contended first round, with both men feeling each other out and testing the distance with leg kicks. Holland finishes the round strongly as he catches a kick and drops Ponzinibbio with a back fist. Holland comes out as the aggressor in the second, but Ponzinibbio is moving well and returning leg kicks, causing damage to Holland's lead leg. Likely down on the scorecards, Ponzinibbio comes out much more active in the final round chasing Holland, trying to capitalize on the damaged leg. Holland, however, instead catches Ponzinibbio with a fantastic left hook which sends him face down to the canvas, where Holland is able to finish the fight as the referee intervenes.

## Rob Font vs. Adrian Yanez

**Result:** Rob Font def. Adrian Yanez via TKO – Round 1, 2:57
**Division:** Bantamweight
**Referee:** Keith Peterson

As expected, this fight starts with fireworks as both men come out hot. A very even fight in the opening round as both men traded and moved well inside the octagon. Both men find success with their fists, but it would be Font who finds the more devastating as a right hand connects and sends Yanez crashing to the mat. He followed up with a ground and pound until the referee called the fight; sees Rob Font get an excellent victory over a hot prospect on an impressive win streak.

A slower start than most anticipated at the fight stays on the feet, with both men feeling each other out. Both men land some nice jabs but a reasonably quiet opening round. Burns implements his wrestling this round as he takes Masvidal down early and controls him for most of the round, Masvidal does get up multiple times, but Burns can drag him right back down. Masvidal has his best moments early in the third, but Burns replies with some big right hands, a punch that found success throughout the fight. With a minute left Burns gets another takedown and controls the fight until the final bell. Burns gets the victory, and Masvidal retires during his post-fight speech. 

## Alex Pereira vs. Israel Adesanya
**Result:** Israel Adesanya def. Alex Pereira via knockout (punches) – Round 2, 4:21

**Division:** Middleweight

**Referee:** Dan Miragliotta

Both men are tentative in the opening round, throwing a lot of leg kicks and feints, trying to draw the other out into making a mistake, almost like watching a high-level game of chess. Pereira pressures forward at the start of the second round and seemingly lands a few big shots backing Adesanya up against the cage. Adesanya has started to have some success in response but is having trouble with the calf kicks. Sensing this, Pereira presses Adesanya against the cage and starts to let his fists and knees fly until Adesanya, with his back up against the cage, responds with a humongous right hand that rocks Pereira. He follows up with another right and sends Pereira crashing backward as he is OUT COLD—a remarkable KO victory to regain the title for Adesanya. 




UFC 287 Post-Fight Results

The PFL is back this week with its most stacked card of the year so far as Canadian Lightweight champion Olivier Aubin-Mercier takes on former UFC standout Shane Burgos. This card is loaded from top to bottom with some live underdogs, so let's go over each of my predictions and betting picks for the card.

## Olivier Aubin-Mercier -145 vs. Shane Burgos +115

The PFL debut of Shane Burgos has arrived, and he will take on the Lightweight champion Olivier Aubin-Mercier. OAM is coming off a huge knockout over Stevie Ray to win the million dollars last year in what was a phenomenal season overall. Shane Burgos has had some wild fights with top contenders at Featherweight in the UFC and now moves up to Lightweight for his PFL run. 

I like Aubin-Mericer here as he is the more well-rounded and defensively responsible fighter. If this line switches as it is trending, I will likely play Aubin-Mericer.

Pick: Aubin-Mercier

## Clay Collard -255 vs. Yamato Nishikawa +205

Action is expected in this matchup at Lightweight. Clay Collard has made a name for himself as the most exciting fighter in the PFL using his slick boxing and constant forward pressure. Yamato Nishikawa makes his PFL debut here at a very young age. 

I am taking Clay Collard here as this is an excellent matchup for him as Nishikawa is very untested, and Collard is not the fighter you want your first test against. 

Pick: Collard

## Denis Goltsov -625 vs. Patrick Brady +450

The lone Heavyweight matchup here on the card as Denis Goltsov is rebooked following his pullout against Yorgan De Castro. Denis Goltsov is a strong grappler with a good submission game for his size. Patrick Brady enters this bout with minimal experience but an impressive record with both submission and knockout victories on his record. 

I'm taking Goltsov here as this is a bad matchup for Brady in his debut, and I do not think he can compete in this matchup. 

Pick: Goltsov 

## Carlos Leal -245 vs. David Zawada +195

Welterweight action in this one. Carlos Leal returns after shaking things up last season with a massive upset over Ray Cooper before losing to eventual champ Sadibou Sy. David Zawada makes his PFL debut here; he has experience against very high-level competition with a win over Abubakar Nurmagomedov. 

This fight is closer than the odds indicate with Leal having only really had one great performance in the PFL, so I'll lean with Zawada from a betting perspective. 

Pick: Zawada

## Magomed Umalatov -400 vs. Dilano Taylor +300

Hard-hitting Welterweights collide in this one. Magomed Umalatov is undefeated, with plenty of highlight knockouts to show he's legit, and the only thing that has held him back from PFL gold so far is visa issues. Dilano Taylor is coming off a great season where he made it to the finals against Sadibou Sy. 

This is another runner-up from last season with a tempting price tag that I must urge people to avoid, as Umalatov is not a fighter I would want to put my money against.

## Sadibou Sy -192 vs. Jarrah Hussein Al-Silawi +162

Last season's Welterweight champion returns to defend his throne. Sadibou Sy is a powerful kickboxer with insane speed that causes opponents trouble when across from him. Jarrah Hussein Al-Silawi is a crafty striker who has been fighting high-level opponents for much of his career, although he suffered a knockout loss his last time out that may be tough to recover from. 

This is a good matchup for both men to do what they like which is strike, although I believe Sy has a clear advantage in speed, power, and durability which will make me take him here.

Pick: Sy

## Magomed Magomedkerimov -902 vs. Ben Egli +602

Grapplers matchup here early in the season at Welterweight. Magomed Magomedkerimov has become one of the most feared names in the PFL with wins over Ray Cooper and Chris Curtis over his time in the promotion. Ben Egli makes his debut here, and he has a solid submission game, although he has yet to compete with much, high-level competition. 

There is a reason Magomedkerimov is this size a favorite, although with that being the case, I see no value in this line. 

Pick: Magomedkerimov

## Natan Shulte -365 vs. Stevie Ray +290

Fun matchup here at Lightweight between contenders. Natan Shulte looks to bounce back after a disappointing season last year. Stevie Ray comes in off his runner-up season, including two wins over Anthony Pettis. 

At first glance, seeing the runner-up from last season in a matchup where he will likely have some grappling exchanges is tempting, although Shulte has all the tools to defend the grappling and dominate this fight striking. 

Pick: Shulte

## Raush Manfio +130 vs. Alex Martinez -160

Another exciting Lightweight matchup here on the card. Raush Manfio has been very fun to watch over his PFL run with several comeback knockout victories. Alex Martinez was given a very tough schedule over the last few seasons, and he has shown good accounts of himself against the top fighters in the division with some very close decisions. 

It has been fun backing Manfio over his PFL run with him cashing some underdog tickets; however, against a durable guy in Martinez, I do not believe his style is reliable. 

Pick: Martinez

## Shane Mitchell +190 vs. Nayib Lopez -230

High pace Welterweights go head-to-head here. Shane Mitchell is a finisher with power on the feet and a good submission game, although he is often kill or be killed. Nayib Lopez enters with an impressive undefeated record, and although the competition was not very high level, he took part in multiple five-round fights; he has found more finishes of last in his career and stopped three of his previous four opponents. 

I'll take Lopez here, as he has proven much more durable and controlled in his fights.

## Bruno Miranda -160 vs. Ahmed Amir +130

Debuting Lightweights look to make a name for themselves here. Bruno Miranda comes in off a knockout on the PFL challenger series, where he showed off his impressive punching power that has earned him three knockouts in his last four fights. Ahmed Amir appears to be a solid submission artist although it is difficult to get a read on him with many of his fights coming over very unimpressive competition.

I like Miranda in this matchup as he has faced much tougher competition and has proven competitive when stepping up, unlike Amir. 

Pick: Miranda

## Zach Juusola +108 vs. Brandon Jenkins -138

A fun matchup between aggressive Welterweights here. Zach Juusola makes his PFL debut here after getting a huge upset win on the PFL challenger series; he has solid boxing, although he has been finished several times. Brandon Jenkins returns to the PFL here after spending some time in the UFC following his highlight knockout over Jacob Kilburn.

I'll lean with Jenkins here as he has the experience edge, although it is difficult to trust such a wild fighter.

PFL 3 Predictions

Somehow this matchup of highly ranked Flyweight finishers between Matheus Nicolau and Brandon Royval finds itself on the prelims of this week's card from Kansas City, headlined by Max Holloway vs. Arnold Allen. 

## This bout is contested at 125Ib Flyweight.

Royval enters this contest as the #4 ranked Flyweight in the world with a record of 14-6-0. Nicolau is ranked one spot behind Royval at #5 with a record of 19-2-1.

Brandon Royval came into the UFC on fire after being known for his exciting fights in the LFA; he finished his first two UFC fights by submission over Tim Elliot and Kai Kara-France, which set him up for a title eliminator against Brandon Moreno, which he lost due to injury. 

Royval has currently won two straight fights to get himself back on track with a decision over Rogerio Bontorin and a submission against Matt Schnell in the first round his last time out. 

With a 4-2 record, including three submission wins in his exciting UFC run, it is expected that Royval will once again be hunting the finish as he searches for his first UFC title opportunity.

Matheus Nicolau joined the UFC in 2016 after competing on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil season four. After winning his first three fights, he suffered a knockout loss to Dustin Ortiz but has bounced back from that with six straight wins.

In those six fights, Nicolau has earned two finish victories, most recently with a knockout over Matt Schnell. He also holds a win over the highly touted Manel Kape in a close decision. 

With an impressive UFC record of 9-1, Nicolau will look to continue his winning streak this weekend and cement himself as a title challenger in the Flyweight division.

From a betting perspective, there has been some early action on the Nicolau side, which I agree with, as I also played him early to get the reduced price. I still agree with him being the side to play, as Royval plays a risky game in his fights while Nicolau is much more measured, which should help him control this matchup.

Sleeper Fight of the Week: Brandon Royval vs. Matheus Nicolau

After a fantastic night of fights, UFC 287 will go down as a historic card as Israel Adesanya reclaimed his throne as the Middleweight champion. He finally defeated his rival Alex Pereira and did it in spectacular fashion. Adesanya knocked Pereira out cold in the second round with a beautiful overhand right with some follow-up shots to solidify the victory. 

It seemed like the end was near as Pereira had Adesanya against the cage. A familiar spot in which Pereira defeated Adesanya at UFC 281. This time, the roles switched as Adesanya countered perfectly, ending the night as the Middleweight champion again. 

The Middleweight division has questions that need to be answered after UFC 287. Many of the fighters in the division need fights, and we are here to matchmake them. Here are the five fights to make next in the Middleweight division.

## Israel Adesanya vs. Khamzat Chimaev

The next title fight at 185 lbs should be Israel Adesanya against Khamzat Chimaev. The champ has already wiped the top five of the division and needs new blood. Chimaev is the perfect fighter for this scenario. The permanent move to Middleweight is one every fight fan is eager to see, and the timing couldn't be better. There is an argument to be made to schedule the trilogy between Pereira and Adesanya, but the fact is that Pereira is best to move up to Light Heavyweight. He cuts a lot of weight to make 185 lbs, and he can challenge Jamahal Hill next for the title. So with all that being said, the next title fight should be between "The Last Stylebender" and "Borz." 

## Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa

It's time to reschedule the fight that was scrapped from UFC 284 between Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa. It's the appropriate next step for both fighters, as the winner could be next in line for a title shot. Costa is coming off a great win against Luke Rockhold, and a top-five matchup with Whittaker would continue to make the ball roll in the Middleweight division. Whittaker could wait for a title shot, but staying active is in his best interest after defeating Marvin Vettori. This would be a proper number-one contender fight in the division. 

## Jared Cannonier vs. Marvin Vettori

Another top-five matchup that makes the most sense is between Jared Cannonier and Marvin Vettori. Cannonier is coming off a victory over Sean Strickland and would like to fight someone ahead of him in the rankings. Vettori just won over Roman Dolidze, so it aligns very well with the division and the timeline. The matchup is excellent from a stylistic standpoint, and one fight fans would enjoy. It could become a tremendous main card fight on a big PPV card. 

## Dricus Du Plessis vs. Sean Strickland

After recently being called out at the UFC 287 post-fight press conference from the champion, Dricus Du Plessis would need a couple of more wins to get that title shot. A significant step forward in that direction is with top contender Sean Strickland. Strickland and Du Plessis are both coming off wins in their previous fights, and the winner could place themselves in title contention. Du Plessis is on a seven-fight winning streak as he recently defeated Derek Brunson. Adesanya already has his sights set on Du Plessis as he awaits that matchup. 

## Roman Dolidze vs. Kelvin Gastelum

After an impressive performance against Chris Curtis, Kelvin Gastelum deserves a fight against a top-ten opponent. The stylistic matchup between Gastelum and Roman Dolidze has all the makings of a great fight. Dolidze must bounce back after losing to Marvin Vettori, so fighting back in the rankings wouldn't be wrong. Gastelum is a former title challenger that would provide Dolidze with the experienced opponent he needs. On the flip side, Dolidze provides a step-up in competition for Gastelum after his win at UFC 287. 

5 fights to make next in the Middleweight division

Years before Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya competed in the UFC, they competed in kickboxing. Let’s take a look at what happened in those fights, along with watching the full fight videos.


# The First Kickboxing Fight

The first kickboxing fight between Pereira and Adesanya took place on April 2nd in Shenzhen, China at Glory of Heroes 1. This was a highly competitive fight that saw Pereira win a unanimous decision. Many, including Adesanya, believed he won the fight. You can judge that for yourself by watching the full kickboxing fight video below.

# The Second Kickboxing Fight

The second kickboxing fight took place less than one year later at Glory of Heroes 7 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The rematch started off competitive, but Adesanya started to hurt Pereira, even securing a standing eight count. While Pereira looked like he was about to lose, he came back in the 3rd round and finished Adesanya with a left hook. This was the first knockout loss of Adesanya’s combat sports career.  After the fight, Alex Pereira’s son got into the ring and mocked Adesanya by falling to the ground. You can watch the Pereira vs. Adesanya 2 kickboxing full fight video below.

This would end up being the final fight of Adesanya’s kickboxing career. He went on to pursue MMA full-time while Pereira stayed in kickboxing. Adesanya would end up thriving in the UFC, becoming one of the greatest Champions in UFC history, while Pereira would succeed in kickboxing.

Before Adesanya fought Yoel Romero in March of 2020, he did an interview with Sporting News Australia. Adesanya was asked about Pereira, who, at the time, had not competed in MMA in 4 years. Adesanya said in the interview, “He's gonna be at some pub while I'm world Champion saying I beat that guy while trying to get a d*ck suck from a crack whore”.

Pereira, who’s struggled with alcoholism in the past, had a fire lit under him after watching that interview. He returned to MMA 7 months later with Adesanya as his eventual target. He made it to the UFC and destroyed the competition, earning a title shot against Adesanya.

## Marina Mokhnatkina Vs. Yoko Higashi

**Result:** Mokhnatkina def. Higashi Via TKO - round 2, 1:29

**Division:** Women's featherweight.

**Referee:** Chris Tognoni

Mokhnatkina dominantly started round 1 with a clear mindset to victory through her takedowns. In doing so, Mokhnatkina would overwhelm her opponent for the entirety of the first round and avoid any damage in the process. Mokhnatkina was seconds away from ending the fight in the first round with a rear naked choke in the final seconds, but we would progress and see a second round. Round 2 would start identically to the first, with Mokhnatkina landing an early takedown before transitioning into a crucifix, where she would end the fight via TKO while reigning down punches. This would give Mokhnatkina a massive 5 points in the first fight of the women's featherweight division.

## Evelyn Martins vs. Karolina Sobek

**Result:** Evelyn Martins def. Karolina Sobek via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

**Division:** Women's featherweight

**Referee:** Jerin Valel

After a highly competitive fight, in which much time was spent grappling,  Martins emerged victorious as she took over in the second and third rounds. Martins remained undefeated, and Sobek suffered her first defeat. This would also give Martins 3 points to kickstart her season.

## Martina Jindrova vs. Amber Leibrock

**Result:** Amber Leibrock def. Martina Jindrova via knockout (head kick) – Round 1, 2:19

**Division:** Women's featherweight

**Referee:** Jason Herzog

An incredible PFL debut for Leibrock as she landed a fantastic head kick in the first round. After a tight back-and-forth opening to the bout, Leibrock shut Jundrova's lights out and earnt the maximum 6 points in her season opener, sending a statement out to the rest of the division as she did so. 

## Yorgan De Castro vs. Danilo Marques

**Result:** Danilo Marques def. Yorgan De Castro via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

**Division:** Heavyweight

**Referee:** Herb Dean

In a quiet fight, both men invested in leg kicks and spent most of the fight avoiding each other's power rather than pressing forward. The boos could be heard from the audience when the fight ended as the fans let their opinion of the fight be known. Regardless of the action, or lack of, Marques was the more active fighter and earnt himself a unanimous decision victory and 3 points to kickstart the heavyweight season.

## Maurice Greene vs. Marcelo Nunes

**Result:** Maurice Greene def. Marcelo Nunes via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 1:20

**Division:** Heavyweight

**Referee:** Mark Smith

The first round was spent by Nunes attempting to grapple while Greene attempted to strike at range. Nunes did successfully take Greene down, but it was only momentarily, and Greene showed signs of what was to come with some very successful striking, particularly with knee's up the middle. In the second round, Greene would find even more success, turn up the pressure, find the finish, and bag himself 5 points. 

## Renan Ferreira vs. Rizvan Kuniev

**Result:** Rizvan Kuniev def. Renan Ferreira via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

**Division:** Heavyweight

**Referee:** Herb Dean

Kuniev was highly dominant for much of the fight; optimizing his wrestling in the first round, Kuniev would also show signs of his stand-up ability. The second round was highlighted by Ferrerira's reversal in which he had a deep armbar and looked to have Kuniev in a lot of danger. However, Kuniev was able to escape and finish the round on top, landing significant strikes. The third round was similar to the first, in which Kuniev had his opponent on his back, smothering him to a unanimous decision and 3 points.

## Main Card

## Biaggio Ali Walsh Vs. Isaiah Figuroa

**Result:** Biaggio Ali Walsh def. Isaiah Figuroa - round 1, 1:42.

**Division:** Lightweight (amateur bout)

**Referee:** Mark Smith

The grandson of the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali, Biaggio Ali Walsh, started the bout aggressively and kept on pressure until the finish. Figuroa attempted three takedowns early, which Ali Walsh responded to each with excellent sprawls and scrambled to avoid being taken down. Keeping the fight on the feet would ultimately lead to the victory as Ali Walsh was able to find the target with quick hands-on numerous occasions, and his right hand would prove to be too much for his opponent as referee Mark Smith would step in at 1:42 of the first round to call an end via TKO.

## Olena Kolesnyk Vs. Aspen Ladd

**Result:** Olena Kolesnyk def. Aspen Ladd via majority decision (28-28,29-28,29-28)

**Division:** Women's featherweight 

**Referee:** Mark Smith

Kolesnyk would miss weight before the bout by 0.4 lbs. As a result, she would still be eligible to earn points for the season but will lose 1 point as a penalty. This would also be why she was noticeably entering the cage with a shaven head as she attempted to do everything she could to make weight. 

Kolesnyk managed distance well, using her jab and movement throughout the fight. She also avoided Ladd's grappling in the first two rounds, which is what many believed would be Ladd's path to victory before the bout. Coming out in the third noticeably more assertive, Ladd scored her second takedown of the fight, but this time she was able to control her opponent and looked a lot more dangerous. However, Kolesnyk was able to fight the hands and survive the fight's final moments, which confusingly ran 12 seconds longer than it should have. Ultimately, Kolesnyk earned herself a majority decision victory and 2 points after the penalty deduction. 

## Bruno Cappelozza vs. Matheus Scheffel 

**Result:** Bruno Cappelozza def. Matheus Scheffel via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 2:15

**Division:** Heavyweight

**Referee:** Herb Dean
 
Scheffel came out as the aggressor looking to put the PFL 2021 heavyweight champ Cappelozza on the back foot early. However, Cappelozza was able to evade any real danger before landing a straight right hand right on the money that dropped his opponent. A couple of follow-up punches led to the referee's intervention and a massive 6-point victory for the ex-champ.

## Larissa Pacheco vs. Julia Budd

**Result:** Larissa Pacheco def. Julia Budd unanimous decision (30-27,29-28,30-27)

**Division:** Women's featherweight

**Referee:** Jason Herzog

Debuting in a new weight class, PFL's 2022 women's lightweight champion Larissa Pacheco came out in round 1, landing some heavy shots and showcasing her stand-up prowess.
