**Miranda Maverick vs Priscila Cachoeira**

It was all Maverick through the get-go. She dominated the fight with almost nine minutes of control time on the ground and landed 105 total strikes compared to Cachoeira's 13. It wasn't a Priscila Cachoeira fight without some fouls, as she was caught grabbing the fence multiple times and grasped the top of Maverick while they were grappling. It appears a ranked opponent is next for Maverick.

**Matthew Semelsberger vs Uros Medic**

Semelsberger seemed to have control of the fight until he didn't. A dominant first round led to him tiring out, and Medic landed a brutal spinning back fist in the third round that dropped Semi and later finished him with ground and pound. Matthew looked phenominal early, as he dropped Medic in the first round but could not find a finish. 

**Result:** Uros Medic def Matthew Semelsberger by third round knockout.

**Jake Matthews vs Darrius Flowers**

Darrius Flowers may be the first fighter to get knocked out and submitted in the same fight. Flowers looked great early on, but a questionable groin shot sent him down to the canvas in agony. However, when the UFC commentators went to the instant replay, they saw that what sent Flowers down was not a kick to the groin, rather a kick to the body, just above the waist line. The referee, Tyler Tomlinson did not see this, and let Flowers recover until it was time to fight again. Jake Matthews, a guy with a lot of UFC experience remained unfazed by the antics of Flowers throughout the fight and found a rear naked choke in the second round.

**Roman Kopylov vs Claudio Ribeiro**

There were a lot of fantastic finishes on this card. Unfortunately, Roman Kopylov's may have gone under the rug after watching Derrick Lewis and Justin Gaethje record unebelievable knockouts. However, it's worth talking about. Kopylov came out agressive, blasting Ribeiro with shots which resulted in really no offense from Claudio. Right out of the gate in the second round, Kopylov blasted Ribeiro with a picture perfect head kick that sent him crashing to the canvas unconscious.

**CJ Vergara vs Vinicius Salvador**

Our first decision of the night went to CJ Vergara and Vinicius Salvador. The fight was very close contested and back and forth, but Vergara ultimately won a 29-28 on all three judges' scorecards.

**Gabriel Bonfim vs Trevin Giles**

Gabriel Bonfim looks like the future at 170 pounds. Just pure domination against a legit UFC veteran in Trevin Giles. Bonfim ragdolled Giles to the canvas in the first 60 seconds of the fight, and locked in a guillotine that ended Giles' night early. Short, but dominant for Gabriel Bonfim who now moves to 15-0.

## Main Card

**Kevin Holland vs Michael Chiesa**

A bit of an upset to some, but who thought Kevin Holland was going to get it done by submission? According to the UFC broadcast, this was the third time Michael Chiesa has been submitted by a d'arce choke, and the fifth time overall. Really impressive performance by Kevin Holland, perhaps the biggest win of his career. This shoots him into the welterweight top fifteen, and he will absolutely be getting a big fight next.

**Tony Ferguson vs Bobby Green**

It's been a really tough break for Tony Ferguson. One of the most dramatic falls from the top we've ever seen in this sport. Once considered one of the best lightweights on the planet on a twelve fight win streak, Ferguson has now lost six fights in a row, including a recent submission loss to Bobby Green. Ferguson looked competitive in the fight, but Green was just piecing him up with combinations and did some serious damage on the ground from top position. Not sure what's next for El Cucuy.

**Derrick Lewis vs Marcos Rogerio de Lima**

Perhaps the most entertaining 33 seconds you'll ever see in mixed martial arts, Derrick Lewis and his new six pack of abs came rushing out of the opening bell to a vicious flying knee that sent Rogerio de Lima to the canvas. A few hard ground shots later and Lewis has his shorts off in the middle of the octagon! With the knockout, post-fight celebration, and the hilarious interview afterwards, this was a peak Derrick Lewis performance that will be shown online for a long time.

**Jan Blachowicz vs Alex Pereira**

Jan came out with a very clear intention of grappling and that he did exceptionally well against Alex Pereira, taking him down within the first 30 seconds of the fight. Jan landed three takedown and recorded over seven minutes of control time, but Pereira survived and did major damage to Blachowicz's leg on the feet. Jan was exhausted going into the final round, and a late takedown was not enough to win him the fight. It was a really close and competitive fight between Blachowicz and Pereira, but the former middleweight champion moves to 1-0 as a light heavyweight and seems to have a title shot in his distant future.

**Dustin Poirier vs Justin Gaethje II**

One year ago, Leon Edwards shocked the world and won the UFC welterweight title with a beautiful head kick knockout over Kamaru Usman. A year later, Justin Gaethje avenged his longtime teammate and friend by knocking out Dustin Poirier in an eerily similar fashion. The first round was close, with two judges giving the first round to Poirier, but exactly one minute into the second round, Gaethje blew the roof off of the Delta Center with a right high kick that knocked Poirier out cold. Both looked incredibily sharp throughout the fight, but I don't think anyone expected the fight to end the way it did. Justin Gaethje is the baddest man on the planet.

UFC 291 Post Fight Results

Every fighter, whether professional or amateur knows how difficult and challenging it is to become a champion. When a fighter wins a title, they often talk afterwards about their road to achieving that lifelong goal, and explain the challenges they had to overcome to get there. It is even more rare to become a multi-sport champion and to hold titles across multiple disciplines of MMA. Alex Pereira is one of the most credentialed combat sports athletes today. He has dominated the kickboxing world, and has done the same in mixed martial arts. 

The casual fan will know Alex Pereira for his storied rival with the current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. The two fights are tied one apiece, with each fighter holding a knockout win over the other. What people may not realize is that this rivarly spans over the course of several years, in multiple different sports. Alex and Israel competed under the same kickboxing promotion Glory and both have had their own successes. Lots of people understand Adesanya's background as a kickboxer, but not many know how dominant Alex Pereira's run was as a former two division champion. Let's dive into some of Poatan's accomplishments in kickboxing. 

To start, Alex Pereira is the former Glory middleweight and light heavyweight champion. He has beaten several current UFC fighters under glory, like Israel Adesanya and Dustin Jacoby. His record as a kickboxer is  33-7, with 21 wins by knockout. 

# Claiming the Glory Middleweight Title

Alex won the Glory Middleweight title in 2017 after defeating Simon Marcus by decision at Glory 46. He then went on to defend his title five times against Yousri Belagarousi twice, Simon Marcus again, Jason Wilnis, and Ertugrul Bayrak. Through that reign, four of Pereira's five Glory title defenses were won by knockout. Pereira held the Glory middleweight title until he decided to move up to light heavyweight where he would fight for the interim title, and win. 

# Defeating Kickboxing Legend Artem Vakhitov

In his final two fights as a professional kickboxer, Alex Pereira fought a kickboxing legend in Artem Vakhitov twice, winning one and losing one. Artem is a very credentialed kickboxer from Russia who's amassed a 22-6 career record. Vakhitov is one of the greatest kickboxers to ever compete under the Glory banner, and in 2021, Pereira defeated Artem to win the Glory Light Heavyweight title by a split decision.

# Becoming a Two Division Champion

Pereira moved up to light heavyweight to win the interim light heavyweight title against Donegi Abana by third round knockout. This title victory made history, as Pereira became the first fighter under the Glory banner to hold two titles simultaneously. Pereira won the unified light heavywight title after defeating Artem Vakhitov, but later lost a rematch by a decision after a point was deducted for "repeated clinch attempts." 

# Wins over Israel Adesanya

Perhaps Pereira's most recgonizeable accomplishments in the world of kickboxing were his two wins over Israel Adesanya, the catalyst for their rivarly in the UFC. Their first fight took place in 2016 under the Glory of Heroes promotion, where Pereira won a unanimous decision against Adesanya. Israel has been adamant that he won that fight as of recent, but the second of their two kickboxing meetings had no controversey at all. In 2017, one year later, Pereira landed a flush left hook that sent Adesanya onto the canvas at Glory of Heroes 7 in Brazil, and left him unconscious. That clip has been played numerous times, as we saw Adesanya blossom into the mixed martial arts champion he is today. This clip is the single reason we have this storied rivarly between these two fighters, and a big reason why we saw Alex move into the sport of MMA and even win a third fight against Adesanya and becoming a Glory and UFC champion.

Alex Pereira is a two divsion Glory kickboxing champion, and the former UFC middleweight champion. This weekend, he embarks on a new chapter in his career, a fight in the light heavyweight division. A win over Jan Blachowicz could mean a title shot against either Jiri Prochazka, Jamahal Hill, Magomed Ankalaev, or even Adesanya again for a third MMA fight. If Pereira is able to win another UFC title in a new division, not many can lay claim to winning multiple titles across multiple sports like he could. 

Alex Pereira: A Trail Blazer in Kickboxing

One of the more anticipated cards is upon us, as UFC 291 is right around the corner with some fantastic fights. The card is headlined by two fan favorites, Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier will fight for the vacant BMF belt. An interesting Light Heavyweight bout headlines the co-main event as Jan Blachowicz welcomes Alex Pereira to the 205 lb division. The rest of the main card is stacked with fighters like Tony Ferguson, Stephen Thompson, Kevin Holland, and more. Let's dive deeper into the fights on the main card. 

## Michael Chiesa vs. Kevin Holland

The fight that opens up the main card is a great one in the Welterweight division as Michael Chiesa returns to the octagon against Kevin Holland. Fight fans saw Holland compete at UFC 287, where he earned a KO victory over Santiago Ponzinibbio. The "Trailblazer" is known for his stand-up game despite having an underrated submission game. That might be tested as Chiesa is one of the better fighters in the Welterweight division at grappling. Chiesa has 16 professional wins, as all ten finishes have been by submission. He is dangerous on the ground and will look to get back into the win column after dropping two straight against Vicente Luque and Sean Brady. This fight is a tremendous main-card opener and should be an electric one to watch. 

## Tony Ferguson vs. Bobby Green

This Lightweight clash is exciting as Tony Ferguson returns to the octagon against Bobby Green. Ferguson will get most of the fan love at UFC 291 as he is beloved in the UFC community, despite being on a five-fight losing skid. He'll try to change that against Green in what should be a fun match-up. Green loves to stand and bang, as he has some crisp boxing for the division. While being 0-2-1 in his last three fights, Green will look to shift the momentum with a win over a huge fan-favorite. Both fighters are looking to get back into the win column at UFC 291 in what fans can expect to be a great, high pace fight. 

## Michel Pereira vs. Stephen Thompson

If any fight has the chance to take the spotlight from the main event, it is this one. Unfortunately, we will have to wait if this fight continues as planned, as Michel Pereira has missed the Welterweight limit by three pounds. Negotiations are ongoing, but we will preview it as of now. Despite the weight discrepancy, Thompson will likely take the fight and compete at UFC 291. Thompson will have a significant advantage now with his cardio and fitness in the octagon. "Wonderboy" is known for his craftiness and karate skills. He'll pick his shots from the outside and try to methodically break down Pereira. Thompson is coming off an electric win against Kevin Holland and will try to repeat that performance at UFC 291. Pereira missing weight is a problem since this is arguably the biggest fight of his career. He is on a five-fight winning streak and will try to continue that streak against a dangerous opponent. 

## Jan Blachowicz vs. Alex Pereira

The co-main event should not disappoint, as the anticipated Light Heavyweight debut of Alex Pereira is upon us at UFC 291. After losing the Middleweight title to rival Israel Adesanya at UFC 287, Pereira will be going up in weight and taking on the former Light Heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz. Many believe that this is a number one contender fight for the division. Jamahal Hill had to vacate the title due to injury, so there is a real possibility that the winner of this co-main event can get the title shot next. It'd be interesting to see if Blachowicz will implement the same game plan he utilized against Adesanya to Pereira. The most prominent question lies in the wrestling and grappling aspects of the fight. Pereira will look to keep the fight on the feet as he is one of the most dangerous strikers to ever compete in the UFC. His kickboxing abilities are second to none, which will be his path to victory. Blachowicz did a great job checking the kicks of Adesanya when they fought, so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out on the feet when they meet in the octagon. The co-main event is big for the Light Heavyweight division and has significant implications for the winner and loser. 

## Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje 2

The main event will determine who will be crowned the BMF between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. The rematch is upon us and with higher stakes. Both fighters are in their prime and in great shape. The first fight occurred in April of 2018 when Poirier earned a TKO victory in the fourth round. That fight is still considered a "classic" fight, and the rematch might produce another one. Since Jorge Masvidal has retired, the BMF belt has been vacated. The UFC made the right choice to keep the belt alive and have two of the most violent Lightweights ever fight for it. Everyone remembers the inaugural BMF fight between Masvidal and Nate Diaz at Madison Square Garden. The second-ever fight will now happen at UFC 291, and fans expect a fantastic show. Gaethje will bring the chaos with him into the octagon and the heavy leg kicks he is known for. Poirier had trouble with those leg kicks in the first fight and will try to mitigate that now in the rematch. Poirier can also be chaotic, but it's more controlled than Gaethje, making this fight tremendous and entertaining. Poirier said it best in an interview about this BMF fight at UFC 291: "I don’t think it goes 25 minutes. If it does, me and him will chat about it in the hospital because that’s where we will be going.”

Douglas Vegas Bets

The UFC brings an all-action headliner between Lightweights Dustin Poirier -145 and Justin Gaethje +128 to Salt Lake City, Utah. This PPV card is full of great matchups, including a Welterweight bout between fan favorites Michael Chiesa +126 and Kevin Holland -143. I broke down every matchup on the card, so let’s get into it.

## Dustin Poirier -145 vs. Justin Gaethje +128

The BMF title returns for this battle of Lightweight strikers. Dustin Poirier has some of the best boxing in all of MMA with his long combinations, although he has struggled at times, even in his wins against Dan Hooker and Michael Chandler. Justin Gaethje is a powerful striker with a phenomenal left hook and right uppercut, not to mention his fantastic leg kicks; when his shot selection is on, he is tough to beat. 

I like Gaethje in this one, as I think he has the power to give Poirier trouble and has grown tremendously since their first matchup.

Pick: Gaethje O/U: Over 2.5 -128

## Jan Blachowicz -111 vs. Alex Pereira -101

A new face battles a former champion in this huge Light Heavyweight clash. Jan Blachowicz has grown a lot over his career, showing a very solid kickboxing game with exceptional leg kicks, and his ground game has also been there against smaller opponents. Alex Pereira steps up to what is likely his proper weight class just a few months after his brutal knockout loss to Israel Adesanya in their rematch; his power remains unmatched in the UFC, with his signature left hook, although his grappling is a large concern. 

I lean with Blachowicz in this one as I think he could use his grappling to dominate or keep it close in a striking match, although his age is a concern, and Pereira can give anyone trouble with one punch. 

Pick: Blachowicz O/U: Under 1.5 +110

## Stephen Thompson -145 vs. Michel Pereira +129

Welterweight strikers with very unique styles test their skills against one another here. Stephen Thompson has used his in and out striking to confuse opponents for his entire career, and he is coming off a fantastic performance against Kevin Holland, where he showed the speed and cardio are still there. Michel Pereira is a wild and powerful striker who has calmed down his style over his career, although his cardio is still not great, and he has been out volumed before. 

I like Thompson in this one, as he should have the technical advantage in the striking, and I do not expect Pereira to attempt to grapple. 

Pick: Thompson O/U: Over 2.5 -217

## Tony Ferguson +320 vs. Bobby Green -370

Veterans meet in this heated Lightweight matchup. Tony Ferguson looks to end his losing streak here back at his normal weight class, he has a tricky submission game and decent volume, but his speed is gone at this stage of his career. Bobby Green comes in with a trademarked hands-low style that has given opponents trouble for years, he has decent volume, but his power is not the most devastating. 

I expect Green to win this one with slightly more volume, although, at this price, I can’t bet him. I did bet the over here, as both men have been historically durable and are more volume strikers than power punchers. 

Pick: Green O/U: Over 2.5 -141

## Michael Chiesa +126 vs. Kevin Holland -143

Here at Welterweight, we see a clash of styles featuring a veteran's return against a fan favorite. Michael Chiesa returns from a rather long layoff here; although he has been in camp for some time with a matchup with Li Jingliang fell through, he is a tremendous wrestler with good cardio, and although his striking is slow, he is not bad defensively. Kevin Holland stays active here, and I expect much of the same from him, a long, powerful striker who struggles with wrestlers who have good control. 

I’ve got Chiesa here as I believe his grappling advantage will be too much for Holland to deal with, and he will control his way to a decision win.

Pick: Chiesa O/U: Over 2.5 +142

## Trevin Giles +265 vs. Gabriel Bonfim -312

A bright prospect at Welterweight takes on a solid step up here. Trevin Giles is a talented fighter with a very impressive jab, although his durability is a slight concern. Gabriel Bonfim burst onto the scene to start the year with a quick submission win demonstrating his dominant grappling ability that has earned him fourteen finishes in as many fights.

I’ll pick Bonfim, but these odds are too wide for me to have any interest as he remains very untested, and Giles has the tools to win if this fight stays on the feet and gets into the later stages.

Pick: Bonfim O/U: Under 1.5 -152

## Derrick Lewis +190 vs. Marcos Rogerio De Lima -217

Hard-hitting Heavyweights collide here. Derrick Lewis looks to get back on track after a few disappointing results; he remains a very powerful knockout artist, but the holes in his game have only become more apparent as he ages. Marcos Rogerio De Lima is an interesting talent for the division, as he has very nice leg kicks, a decent pace, and the ability to mix in grappling at times. 

I’ll pick De Lima here, but as the odds have gotten wider, it has become less interesting to me as he is facing the man with the most knockouts ever.

Pick: De Lima O/U: Under 1.5 -217

## Roman Kopylov -204 vs. Claudio Ribeiro +180

Middleweight strikers with high finish rates clash in this one. Roman Kopylov comes into this off back-to-back knockout, showing he could win a straight striking match. Claudio Ribeiro bounced back from losing his UFC debut by dominating Joesph Holmes, showing major improvements to his grappling along with still powerful and fast striking. 

At these odds, I lean with Ribeiro as I think the striking will be close, but I give Ribeiro the grappling edge, although his cardio is a concern, especially at Utah altitude. 

Pick: Ribeiro O/U: Over 1.5 -147

## Jake Matthews -250 vs. Darius Flowers +215

Short-notice replacement takes on a developing talent here at Welterweight. Jake Matthews is a veteran who has developed a well-rounded game after showing a lot of improvements to his boxing recently. Darius Flowers comes in here on short notice as a fast starter off a weird win on the Contender Series as a big underdog, and he is also rather short for the weight class. 

This is Matthews' fight to lose in my eyes, he is one of my most confident picks on the card here, and I think he finishes the fight as well.

Pick: Matthews O/U: Over 1.5 -128

## CJ Vergara -147 vs. Vinicius Salvador +131

Fun clash of Flyweights here. CJ Vergara is a high pace well-rounded guy coming off a wild comeback win where he outlasted Daniel Lacerda. Vinicius Salvador is a creative striker but is relatively low-volume and has little ground game to speak of. 

I think Vergara takes this one as I give him the grappling and volume edge here, which I believe will get him the win. 

Pick: Vergara O/U: Over 2.5 +110

## Matthew Semelsberger -204 vs. Uros Medic +180

Powerful finishers meetup here on short notice at Welterweight. Matthew Semelsberger has put on a lot of fun fights during his UFC run, showing a lot of power in his hands as well as good durability. Uros Medic steps up in weight here, boasting a lot of quick finishes on his record coming with his lighting fast hands, although he has yet to see deep waters in a fight leaving his cardio a question mark entering this matchup. 

I like Semelsberger to get a knockout in the mid to later stages of this fight as I think he is durable enough to deal with any issues that Medic may cause early and eventually land a power shot as Medic has his gas tank tested. 

Pick: Semelsberger O/U: Over 1.5 -133

## Miranda Maverick -286 vs. Priscila Cachoeira +245

Flyweights start off the night in an interesting stylistic matchup. Miranda Maverick turns around quickly after a disappointing showing at UFC 289; she is a well-rounded offensive fighter with solid boing and a good ground game when she is on top. Priscila Cachoeira is a hard puncher with three knockout wins in her UFC run, although she has struggled with grappling, having been submitted multiple times. 

I’ll pick Maverick here as she will have a large grappling edge that I see her using to find a submission, and her standup is not bad, so I don’t expect much success from Cachoeira.

It's been a big and busy day in the world of MMA, with plenty of high-stakes matchups announced across the Featherweight and Lightweight divisions. Let's take a look at some of the fights that are in the works.

## Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot Get Their Main Event Wish

After verbally agreeing to the bout online via Twitter, Mateusz Gamrot and Rafael Fiziev will now face each other in the main event slot of UFC on ESPN 54 on September 23rd, per Dana White. This bout will mark the second main event slot for both fighters. Both men are undefeated in main event slots, with Fiziev scoring a fifth-round TKO over Rafael Dos Anjos and Gamrot securing a unanimous decision over Arman Tsarukyan.

Rafael Fiziev is coming off a majority decision loss to Justin Gaethje. The two threw down in a Fight Of The Year contender at UFC 286, and despite starting strong and rocking Gaethje, Fiziev would slow down and be outworked by "The Highlight" in the third round. Fiziev will now look to rebound from this loss and secure himself another top-5 matchup if he is victorious. He has phenomenal standup, including a wide variety of accurate and fast kicks, and he'll look to use these to secure his seventh UFC win.

Mateusz Gamrot is coming off a victory over "The Turantula" Jalin Turner. Gamrot would take the matchup on short notice after Turner's original opponent, Dan Hooker, was forced out of the bout due to injury. Gamrot would have a competitive bout but ultimately pull ahead due to his wrestling advantage and was awarded the split-decision win. He'll now look to add Fiziev to his growing resume, and Gamrot will be looking to use his elite wrestling and cardio to do so.

## Dan Ige and Bryce Mitchell Added To Co-Main Slot

Elite Featherweights Dan Ige and Bryce Mitchell will face each other in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 54, per Dana White. Mitchell has not fought since December 2022, whereas Dan Ige has already had two bouts in 2023.

Bryce "Thug Nasty" Mitchell is coming off his first UFC loss. He fought Ilia Topuria at UFC 282 and was dominated most of the bout, failing to keep up with Topuria. He was submitted in the second round and has not fought since. Mitchell was scheduled to face Movsar Evloev at UFC 288 but was removed after suffering a shoulder injury. Now, he'll take on Dan Ige and look to return to winning ways.

Dan Ige is riding a hot two-fight win streak after previously suffering three consecutive unanimous decision losses to Chan Sung Jung, Josh Emmett, and Movsar Evloev. Ige would return in 2023 and face Damon Jackson in January, defeating the rising contender via a second-round KO. Then, he took on Nate "The Train" Landwehr at UFC 289 and won via decision. He'll now look to rack up his third straight victory in his toughest fight this year.

## Giga Chikadze Finally Returns vs. Alex Caceres

After nearly two years, Giga Chikadze will return to face veteran Alex Caceres on August 26th, per Farah Hannoun. The pair were previously matched together in 2020, but Chikaze withdrew from the bout.

Giga Chikadze is coming off a devastating loss to Calvin Kattar, which happened in January 2021 as the year's first event. After a close first round, Chikadze would suffer heavily with cardio and be outworked by the durable Kattar. He would be dominated across rounds 3,4, and 5, absorbing 157 strikes throughout the bout. However, despite the loss, "Ninja" is still an elite fighter in the Featherweight division, boasting victories over Edson Barboza and Cub Swanson, and will be looking to bounce back in style vs. Caceres.

Alternatively, Alex Caceres has enjoyed five UFC bouts and three grappling matchups since Chikdaze's loss. He's currently riding the best streak of his career, with seven wins in his last eight bouts and the only loss coming against Sodiq Yusuff in a competitive fight. "Bruce Leroy" has racked up wins over Julian Erosa, Chase Hooper, Daniel Pineda, and more during this run and has competed in grappling matches vs. Eddy Torres, Pat Sabatini, and Clay Guida. He'll be looking to use his grappling and awkward but effective striking to secure the victory in this bout.

## Sodiq Yusuff vs. Edson Barboza Will Thrown Down On October 14th

Our final fight announcement of the day comes in the Featherweight division. Sodiq Yusuff will face Edson Barboza on October 14th, per Mike Bohn. The main event for this fight night card is currently unconfirmed, so this may serve as the headliner, but this is not verified.

Sodiq Yusuff is coming off a quick victory over Don Shainis after his bout with Giga Chikadze fell through. He secured a guillotine choke submission in precisely thirty seconds last October but has not fought since. On his current two-fight win streak, he also claims a victory over Alex Caceres, where he demonstrated his incredible leg kicks to take the fight away from "Bruce Leroy."

Edson Barboza is also coming off a quick victory. After a year off, "Junior" returned to defeat Billy Quarantillo in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Allen. Barboza perfectly timed a knee on the incoming Quarantillo to secure a highlight reel KO in the first round. He'll now look to secure his second straight win and will aim to use his devastating striking to get the victory.

This Saturday, the UFC returns to Salt Lake City with a loaded card. The elevation of SLC sits at 4,265 feet above sea level, roughly 1,700 feet more than the average elevation in the United States. This increase in altitude can and has affected fighters’ cardiovascular abilities in the past. Let’s take a look at five fighters who struggled with altitude. 

## 5. Ben Rothwell

UFC 135 took place in 2011 in Denver, Colorado. Like Salt Lake City, Denver is at a considerably higher elevation than the average city at 5,276 feet. Unsurprisingly, this took its toll on some fighters, notably Heavyweight Ben Rothwell. Taking on the always-game Mark Hunt, Rothwell was in for a tough scrap regardless of the location. After a wrestling-heavy first round, Rothwell appeared to be up on the scorecards despite having a cut open above his right eye in the closing moments.

At the start of the second round, he knew something was wrong, stating, “I felt immediately different going into the second round. Just completely different. I can’t overstate it. I felt good in the first round, dominated that round, got cut, then stood up (to start the second), and it felt like all my oxygen had been taken from me.” He was visibly off for the remainder of the fight and received a bad beating from the "Super Samoan." In the final two rounds, Rothwell was outstruck 108 to 9, being taken down twice and controlled for over 6 minutes by the former K1 Champion. 

## 4. Charles Oliveira

One of the sport's most accomplished and beloved fighters, Charles Oliveira, went through early career struggles to reach where he is today. In 2016, The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 3 Finale was held in Mexico City, another highly elevated location. With an altitude of 7,349 feet above sea level, it’s not surprising many fighters have had gas tank problems in CDMX. One of these fighters was “Do Bronx,” who, when scheduled to fight Ricardo Lamas, would end up missing weight by an entire weight class, weighing in at 155 for a Featherweight bout.

His team would blame the elevation and previous injuries, claiming, “Our athlete Charles ‘Do Bronx’ was invited to fight only three weeks ago. Even with the short period of recovery, the fighter proudly accepted another challenge to represent Brazil and the UFC. Unfortunately, he was hampered by his recent bout against Anthony Pettis, in August, and the high altitude of Mexico City, and didn’t make the weight.” After a competitive first round, Oliveira looked depleted at the start of the second. In an uncharacteristic performance, he would get controlled and submitted on the ground in the second round.

## 3. Luke Rockhold/Paulo Costa

A necessary double entry, this bout occurred the last time the UFC came to Salt Lake City in 2022. Paulo Costa entered this bout following his weight-miss fiasco before losing to Marvin Vettori, while Rockhold was returning from a three-year layoff. With Rockhold announcing he would retire after the fight and Costa’s struggle to make 185, neither fighter’s cardio was expected to be phenomenal. This would prove more accurate than anyone could imagine, with the fight quickly devolving into a sloppy brawl. After a wild and close first round, both looked exhausted at the start of the second.

Surprisingly, more punches were landed in the second than in the first, but both didn’t have much left in the tank by the third round. Both fighters’ output dropped, with only 25 punches being landed compared to the 53 in the previous round. Although neither had anything left to give, they left it all in the cage to make for an excellent scrap. When it was over, Costa was awarded the unanimous decision victory, and surely both fighters returned home for a fantastic night's sleep.

## 2. Leon Edwards

In another bout from the UFC’s previous visit to Salt Lake City, UFC Welterweight champion Leon Edwards struggled with the altitude against Kamaru Usman. Already in for a war, given he was fighting the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Edwards didn’t need any external factors to make this bout difficult. The elevation was of no concern for his opponent, who regularly trains at high altitudes in Denver. From the start, the difference in preparation was evident, and Usman would go on to outstrike Edwards in all five rounds.

Visibly losing energy each round and undeniably losing the fight, Edwards knew he had to give it everything he had in round 5. With the world and even the commentators (other than Jon Anik) counting him out altogether, he’d manage one of the biggest upsets and most shocking moments in the history of MMA, knocking out Usman with a devastating head kick at 4:04 in the fifth round. Overcoming the odds and the elevation, Edwards proved why he’s a true champion that night.

## 1. Cain Velasquez

Easily the most famous instance of a fighter affected by elevation, this was an obvious #1. One of the greatest champions in the history of our sport, Cain Velasquez, was a dominant wrestler best known for one thing; his cardio, earning him the nickname “Cardio Cain.” No matter who he faced, it was known he was going to put the hurt on his opponent from bell to bell. Whether through his powerful wrestling or sharp boxing, Velasquez was going to beat up and outlast his opponent, and he managed to become a two-time Heavyweight champion doing so. The UFC scheduled him to defend his strap in Mexico City against former UFC reject Fabricio Werdum.

Werdum had only recently returned after his iconic defeat of Fedor Emelianenko and had mounted a five-fight win streak on his path to the title. Aware of the issues presented by the elevation, Werdum flew out six weeks early to acclimate. On the other hand, Velasquez wasn’t as concerned, showing up just two weeks before their showdown. This decision would prove his downfall; Velasquez was uncharacteristically tired in a close, back-and-forth affair. Eventually, he’d shoot a desperate takedown and fall right into the loving arms of Fabricio Werdum, who immediately locked in a guillotine. The champ was forced to tap, and the legend of “Sea Level Cain” was born. 


5 Fighters Who Struggled With Altitude

A big fight between top-10 Middleweights has just been announced. Derek Brunson will face Roman Dolidze at UFC 295 at the MSG Arena in New York, New York, on November 11th, per Giorgi Kokiashvili.

**This fight takes place in the Middleweight division.**

Derek Brunson is ranked #8 in the Middleweight division and holds a professional record of 23-9 (14-7 UFC). He has noteworthy wins over Darren Till, Kevin Holland, and Edmen Shahbazyan.

Roman Dolidze is ranked #9 at Middleweight and has a professional record of 12-2 (6-2 UFC), with notable victories over Phil Hawes, Jack Hermansson, and Kyle Daukaus.

**Official odds have yet to be released.**

Derek Brunson is coming off a wild fight vs. Dricus du Plessis. Despite massive success with his striking and wrestling, Brunson's cardio wouldn't hold up in the fast-paced fight, and he would eventually be TKOed at the end of round 2. However, Brunson is still a threat in this division, possessing great wrestling that he's used to shut down previous opponents, and he'll be looking to do the same when he faces Dolidze.

Roman Dolidze is also coming off a frantic fight. At UFC 286, he faced Marvin Vettori and had one of the best fights of the night. He would find success throughout the whole bout, frequently landing and taking shots with Vettori; however, he would lose a controversial decision. Dolidze will be looking to rebound from this loss by using his full MMA arsenal to hand Brunson his third straight defeat.

Derek Brunson Faces Roman Dolidze in MSG

In the last two weeks, we've had multiple bouts take place with significant impact on the women's Bantamweight division. The only division in the UFC with a vacant champion, there's an opportunity for some fascinating matchups. The top five has young contenders and grizzled veterans alike, and anyone could end up with the belt. Let's take a look at five potential bouts in the women's 135 pound weight class.

## 5. #5 Holly Holm vs. #9 Macy Chiasson

Perpetual top contender and legend Holly Holm is likely approaching the end of her career, going 3-3 in her last six bouts. At first glance, this looks like a significant downturn, but her previous three losses were all to top-five opponents, one of which was Amanda Nunes. Holm is one of MMA's most well-rounded and well-respected athletes, often heralded as one of the greats since her triumphant defeat of Ronda Rousey in 2015. Holm, one of the most credentialed female strikers, was recently inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Now ranked number five in the division following her loss to Mayra Bueno Silva, Holm is in a unique position. Unlikely to make another title run yet still in the top 5, the best thing for her would be a young contender. Enter Macy Chiasson, a 31-year-old striker who has similarly gone 3-3 in her last six. The winner of the Ultimate Fighter season 28, Chiasson is a big bantamweight with solid power and decent wrestling.

Starting as a striker, Chiasson has rounded out her game in her promotional tenure, and with her size, she’s a problem for anyone at women’s 135. Holm has faced nothing but the best in the UFC, and at 41 years old, she could benefit from fighting someone a bit lower in the rankings. On the other hand, Chiasson hasn’t faced anyone of the skill or name value of Holm and would benefit significantly from the matchup, even in a loss. Both fighters have similar builds and skillsets, and with both coming off a loss, now is the time to make this matchup. 


## 4. #12 Norma Dumont vs. #7 Pannie Kianzad

Norma Dumont is one of the most underappreciated fighters in the division. Debuting in the UFC in 2020, she has quietly amassed a 6-2 record and is currently on a three-fight win streak. An excellent striker with a Sanda background, she has great speed and power in her kicks and punches. Despite her roots, Dumont is no specialist and is a solid grappler with heavy ground and pound. She proved she could shine under the big lights when she was awarded a Fight Night main event in 2021, which she won by unanimous decision. She has been very active with two fights already in 2023, and with the lack of damage she took in her victory over Chelsea Chandler, she could fight again this year.

Despite coming off a loss, Pannie Kianzad would be an excellent matchup. She is a dangerous striker with great technical boxing. She often looks to counterstrike and damage her opponents when they enter the pocket. Like Dumont, Kianzad has grappling abilities, holding a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and great top control. A win in this bout would benefit both; Dumont would beat a higher-ranked opponent and move up, and Kianzad could get back in the win column and possibly the title picture. 

## 3. #6 Irene Aldana vs #10 Karol Rosa

Top contender Irene Aldana is one of the many fighters left in the wake of Amanda Nunes. Before her championship loss to the GOAT, she was on a two-fight win streak and had amassed a 7-4 record in the UFC. A true striking specialist, she’s one of the most boxing-heavy fighters in the division. She has great cardio and is always aggressive, constantly pressing forward and unloading combinations. To back up her aggression, Aldana has excellent head movement in footwork, typically landing more damage than she absorbs. Never content to point-fight, she puts power in every shot and has two first-round knockouts in the UFC. An excellent matchup for her would be Karol Rosa.

Practically the opposite of Aldana, Rosa has a rich grappling background and is a BJJ black belt. She has excellent takedowns and fantastic top control, often controlling her opponents for entire rounds. She has decent hands and is willing to engage on the feet, but is at her best on the mat, landing damage from top position. A  truly classic matchup of striker versus grappler, a win would benefit either greatly. Aldana could prove she can defeat great grapplers, whereas Rosa could prove her skills at the top of the division. 

## 2. #1 Julianna Pena vs. #4 Ketlen Vieira

Yet another fighter left in limbo by the retirement of Amanda Nunes, Julianna Pena is the #1 contender in a division without a champion. A true underdog, she pulled off one of the biggest upsets in MMA history when she defeated Nunes in 2021 for the title. She has only lost to former champions and has gone 7-3 in the promotion since her debut in 2013. Pena is a dominant wrestler who averages nearly two takedowns landed per fight and has four finishes in the UFC. Following the Nunes victory, she’s become a bit controversial, with constant trash talk and a bevy of self-belief. I don’t feel she deserves a title shot off a loss, so defending her #1 contendership against Ketlen Vieira makes perfect sense.

 Vieira is powerful everywhere, with some serious pop in her punches and excellent wrestling. Holding black belts in BJJ and judo, Vieira has great top control and a dangerous submission game. She can hold her own on the feet, throwing constant heat and pressuring forward. With such similar skill sets, both could cause problems for the other. Both are at the top of the division but haven’t entirely earned a title shot in the eyes of fans, and a dominant win in this matchup would be huge for either.

## 1. #2 Raquel Pennington vs. #3 Mayra Bueno Silva

In her tenth year in the UFC, Raquel Pennington has only lost to champions in her promotional tenure and currently rides a five-fight win streak. One of the most experienced fighters in the sport, she’s never lost a step and is still one of the best strikers in MMA. She can hurt her opponent from anywhere with great technical boxing and fantastic clinch striking. Pennington also has excellent footwork and speed, never staying in one spot and constantly attacking from different angles. She varies her shots very well, throws everything in combination, and can easily push a heavy pace across 15 minutes. With one of the best resumes and the longest winning streak in the top 5, Pennington deserves a shot at the vacant title, and Mayra Bueno Silva is the perfect opponent.

Bueno Silva has quickly risen to the top, entering the promotion in 2018 and going 6-2-1, now on a four-fight win streak. Following a massive second-round submission win over Holly Holm, she’s proven she’s one of the best and ready for a shot at the title. With five wins by submission in the UFC, Bueno Silva is at her most dangerous on the ground in top position. Fighting with a Muay Thai style on the feet, she has great power in her hands and uses her striking to set up her grappling. Both would benefit significantly from a title shot; Pennington could finally secure her legacy as a legend of the sport, and Bueno Silva could make herself a household name. Either way, we’d have an excellent champion filling the shoes of Amanda Nunes, something this division desperately needs.

## Professional MMA Debut  

Aliskerov made his professional MMA debut against Alimjon Shadmanov at Fight Stars Europe in 2012. Shadmanov was 4-2 at the time, coming off a loss to future PFL and UFC fighter Gasan Umalatov. Aliskerov dominated the whole fight and won a unanimous decision to begin his career.    





## 8-Fight Win Streak  


Aliskerov followed up his dominant MMA debut against fellow Russian Vladimir Stukalov 3 years later, as during this period, he was actively competing in Combat Sambo and winning gold in all but one tournament he was involved in. Aliskerov finished Stukalov by armbar submission in the first round of the bout.   

Two months later, Aliskerov returned against another Russian, Dmitry Aryshev, who he defeated by yet another dominant unanimous decision.   


Aliskerov would again take time off to compete in the Combat Sambo World Championships and take home medals at all events. His final competition in Combat Sambo would come in 2017 before starting to fight and train full-time in MMA. To close out 2017, Aliskerov would score back-to-back first-round finishes over Rufat Asadov and Jeremy Smith in Brave CF, where he spent most of his career.    


2018 would be the busiest year for Aliskerov in terms of MMA, with three victories inside the Brave CF cage, he won a split decision over Chad Hanekom, followed by back-to-back TKOs over Joey Michael Berkenbosch and Geraldo Coelho de Lima Neto.   

With these wins, Aliskerov would move to 8-0 as a professional over opponents with a combined record of 35-16 before fighting him, even giving two men their first losses.

## Tasting Defeat vs. Khamzat Chimaev   

Aliskerov's first defeat came at the hands of UFC star Khamzat Chimaev at Brave CF in 2019, in a viral uppercut knockout that got Chimaev in Dana White's line of sight.     

Chimaev was relentless with the leg kicks that ultimately set up the knockout.

## Rebuilding to make it to the UFC  

Aliskerov returned from his defeat in December of the same year, again in Brave CF, against MMA veteran Diego Gonzalez. Aliskerov scored the TKO at 2:04 of the final round to get back in the win column.    

Aliskerov would have two more fights in Brave FC against Denis Tiuliulin and Miro Jurković, where he finished them both by Kimura submission.     

Aliskerov went on to have one more fight outside the Zuffa umbrella, this time in Khabib Nurmagomedov's promotion, Eagle FC. Aliskerov took on UFC veteran Nah-Shon Burrell at Eagle FC 46 in March 2022, where he won by unanimous decision and was subsequently offered a shot on Dana White's Contender Series Season 6.    

At Dana White's Contender Series 54, Aliskerov faced 15-2-1 Brazilian prospect Mário Sousa and won by Kimura submission in the first round, leaving Dana White impressed enough to give him a contract to fight in the UFC.   

Aliskerov's record was now 13-1, with 4 KO/TKOs and 5 submissions.

## UFC Debut  

Aliskerov debuted in the UFC against Dana White's Contender Series veteran Phil Hawes. Hawes was 4-2 in the promotion, with impressive wins over Jacob Malkoun, Nassourdine Imavov, Kyle Daukaus, and Deron Winn. Aliskerov made quick work of the American, finishing him by knockout in 2 minutes with a pinpoint combination at UFC 288.

## Next Fight and Opponent Change

Originally, Aliskerov was scheduled to face Paulo Costa at UFC 291; however, the UFC opted to scrap the pairing and instead pit him against Nassourdine Imavov at UFC 294, with Costa now facing Khamzat Chimaev. Ultimately, this new matchup fell through, and now Ikram Aliskerov's next fight will be against Warlley Alves in the preliminary headliner at UFC 294: Makhachev vs. Volkanovski 2.

Barez started this fight off with vicious low attacks landing several low kicks and dropping Filho with shots to the body, but Filho was able to land a takedown. Then he quickly passed guard and secured the fight-ending the choke.

## Bruna Brasil vs. Shauna Bannon

Both women started with lots of leg and body kicks, and as the first round went on, Brasil was able to land some nice shots with her hands. Early round two, Bannon engaged in the clinch, but she was reversed by Brasil before being separated; at the end of the round, Brasil was able to land a beautiful takedown in the center of the cage. Bannon was aggressive to start the third, and she had a lot of success with her hands before Brasil ended the round with some grappling success.

## Chris Duncan vs. Yanal Ashmouz

Ashmouz started this fight off with heavy pressure and power shots, although Duncan was seeing things well. After round one, Ashmouz appeared to have issues with his left arm. Round two saw Duncan largely able to walk down Ashmouz and land nice knees. Round three saw Duncan land power shots at will before landing a late takedown.

## Ketlen Viera vs. Pannie Kianzad

Viera landed an early takedown about a minute in and was able to hold top position for the rest of the first round. Same story early round two as Viera took down Kianzad and attempted several chokes. Kianzad came out swinging for round three, which backfired as she was quickly placed on her back. Viera transitioned to the back before Kianzad reversed position and landed some decent shots before the final bell.

## Bryan Barberena vs. Makhmud Muradov

Muradov went to the grappling early in this one and got some control time before Barberena worked his way back up; late in the round, Muradov landed a big right hand with a takedown. Round two saw Muradov land several big right hands and drop Barberena badly before returning to the grappling later in the round. There was a clash of heads late in the second, but the fight was quickly restarted. Early in the third, Muradov continued to attack the grappling before dropping Barberena again. With a minute left, a brutal clash of heads clearly affected both men, but both got up and fought to the final bell.

## Mick Parkin vs. Jamal Pouges

Early on, this was a close boxing match where Parkin appeared to have a slight edge. As the fight went on, Parkin began landing at a much higher rate mixing in a debilitating leg kick that forced Pouges to switch stances. Parkin finished strong with a good final round to finish off a promising debut.

## Marc Diakiese vs. Joel Alvarez

Both men traded low kicks at a high pace early, with Alvarez landing well at range before a short grappling exchange to end the round. Diakiese went to the wrestling early in round two, landing a takedown. A headbutt hurt Diakiese, and Alvarez locked up a submission shortly after.

## Danny Roberts vs. Johnny Parsons

Parsons blasted powerful kicks early in this one, with Roberts using good movement to evade until late in the round when both men began to trade. After more trading early round two, Roberts shot for a takedown before getting countered and dropped, having to work his way back up to continue to trade wild shots where both landed, but Parsons was able to hurt Roberts again and finish him just before the bell.

## Davey Grant vs. Daniel Marcos

Grant was aggressive early, using a wide variety of kicks to keep his range. Round two saw more forward movement from Marocs that helped him force a cut on the nose of Grant. The third saw Grant turn up the volume early and shoot for a takedown; they returned to trading with Grant going at a much higher pace for the rest of the round other than a quick takedown from Marcos.

## Lerone Murphy vs. Josh Culibao

Murphy came out switching stances early, but Culibao was able to time some combinations before Murphy came back strong late in the round. Culibao attacked the grappling early in round two before Murphy landed a big shot and secured the back until the end of the round. In round three, Culibao was dropped by an awkward body kick, and Murphy was able to maintain top position until the end of the fight.

## Jai Herbert vs. Fares Ziam

These two traded at range early in round one before Herbert forced a clinch which the two spent some time reversing one another in. Round two saw the pair trade combination and work in the clinch until Ziam landed a late takedown which Herbert quickly got up from. The first half of the final round saw more striking, but with neither man able to separate themself, Herbert went for a takedown which was countered with a nice trip by Ziam.

## Andre Muniz vs. Paul Craig

The two decorated grapplers stood across from one another for most of round one before Muniz got some top time at the very end. Craig landed a takedown early in the second before fighting off a deep triangle attempt. Muniz lost top position due to a headbutt, and Craig then reclaimed top position a nearly secured a choke of his own. Craig remained on top and pounded out Muniz with a devastating series of elbows.

## Nathaniel Wood vs. Andre Fili

Fili landed a nice right hand that dropped Wood early in the first. Wood bounced back with some nice leg kicks and a massive shot of his own that dropped Fili against the fence. Early round two, Wood landed a left that backed up Fili. Fili then landed a huge left hook that stunned Wood, and he poured it on, taking the back. Fili stayed on top until the end of round two. The third saw both men take a more cautious approach, with Fili landing his jab nicely, but Wood landed a clean left hook in the final minute, which was the round's biggest shot.
