The UFCs biggest superstar, Conor McGregor, now has less than 48 hours to re-enter the USADA testing pool if he hopes to fight this year.
McGregor last fought in the headliner of UFC 264 on July 10th, 2021, where he faced Dustin Poirier in their trilogy bout. After losing the first round, McGregor suffered a broken leg and could not continue the bout, and he has not fought since. Although "The Notorious" had healed from his injuries, he has yet to enter the USADA testing pool. USADA requires athletes to enter the pool six months before their fight to ensure they are not using banned supplements.
The 31st season of The Ultimate Fighter is currently airing, which stars Conor McGregor and his supposed next opponent Michael Chandler. The two were rumored to face each other at UFC 296 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on December 16th, but with less than two days to go for McGregor to re-enter the testing pool, the chances of this bout occurring are decreasing by the hour; We could be seeing an even further delay for the return of the Mac.
If McGregor does not enter the testing pool by June 16th, there's a slim chance of him competing this year. But, it isn't impossible because McGregor could still be able to fight if USADA grants him an exception. But, the last time this happened, a massive controversy arose. At UFC 200, Brock Lesnar was granted an exception to face Mark Hunt in the co-main event, where he won via unanimous decision. However, Lesnar tested positive for clomiphene, overturning the victory into a No Contest, and was sued by Hunt in the aftermath. No fighter has been granted an exemption since.
When USADA Director of Communications, Averi Walker, was asked about the situation, they had this to say.
The following days will be dicey for McGregor, Chandler, and their fans. Do you think this fight go down in 2023, 2024, or not at all? Leave a comment below to let us know your thoughts.
