At UFC Vegas 51, Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad will compete in a rematch 6 years in the making. The pair first faced off at UFC 205 in November of 2016. This was a historic night as it marked the UFC's first event at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Luque and Muhammad opened the prelims on Fox Sports 1 that night. The fight didn’t last long, as Luque finished Muhammad by knockout in 79 seconds. This is the first and only time in Muhammad’s career that he's been finished.
Muhammad went on a 4 fight winning streak after that fight, defeating the likes of Tim Means, Randy Brown, and Jordan Mein. That winning streak was snapped against Geoff Neal in January of 2019. Muhammad hasn’t lost since, as he’s gone on a 7 fight unbeaten streak. His last two wins came against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Demian Maia.
After defeating Muhammad at UFC 205, Luque lost his next fight to Leon Edwards in March 2017. It was after his fight against Edwards that Luque went on a 6 fight winning streak, becoming a threat to the Welterweight division. He finished 5 consecutive opponents then defeated Mike Perry in a brawl where he shattered his nose. This earned Luque a fight against former title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Luque came up short, losing the fight by unanimous decision. Though he lost, he still earned fight of the night honors.
As he did after his loss to Edwards, Luque successfully bounced back from his loss against Wonderboy and went on another winning streak. Luque is currently on a 4 fight winning streak where he’s finished every opponent including a finish against former Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley.
Since they last fought, both Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad have gone on to become two of the best Welterweight fighters in the division as Luque is ranked #4 and Muhammad is ranked #5. They both have their eyes set on the UFC Welterweight title but must first go through each other to get there.
Luque and Muhammad are set to compete in the main event of UFC Vegas 51 on April 16th.
